Have modern cars lost their way in the pursuit of tech and ever more impressive performance stats? Given 1,000 horsepower now seems entry level in the world of hybridised hypercars but speed limits are the same as they ever were there is an argument some have got too fast for their own good. And while we love our tech it inevitably puts more distance between driver and driving. Which, yes, some of us still actively enjoy!
All sounds a bit philosophical but indulge Rory a bit of a think-piece as he goes for a spin in a ‘restomodded’ Porsche 911, customised by Theon Design. Restomods are growing in popularity, the idea being you take an old car – in this case a 1990s Porsche – and restore it to, literally, better than new condition. Better in the sense that it has all the classic looks and charisma. But modern creature comforts and style, with upgrades like adjustable suspension, safer tyres, improved lighting and – yes – a magnetic holder for the smartphone you now carry. But wasn’t even a thing when the original car was designed. None of this comes cheaply, as you’ll see. But if you have £750,000 to spend on a car Rory might have a compelling alternative right here!
