The Audi A2 is reborn as a modern-age electric hatchback

The original Audi A2 arrived at the turn of the millennium ready to take the world by storm. It was compact, eye-catching and optimised for fuel efficiency, but it was expensive, so it wasn’t the best-seller Audi had hoped for. Now, the A2 is back and this time its electric. The all-new A2 e-tron will be a five-door hatchback and the smallest electric car in Audi’s range. Audi’s CEO, Gernot Döllner, promises it will be an “efficient, compact and confident” electric car at a more realistic price than its critically acclaimed predecessor.

Design and models available

The A2 e-tron picks up where the original A2 left off with compact proportions and an unwavering focus on efficiency. With the camouflage now removed that influence is clear in the styling, the rounded bonnet, swooping roofline and slim rear window all very reminiscent. Like that first A2 aerodymanics are a big part of the package, and an influence on both styling and the remarkable efficiency. We’ll know more about trim levels and badging in due course but expect a four-model line-up based on the power output. In terms of style there will be a choice of standard or S line options, the latter with different paint choices, sportier sculpting to front and rear bumpers and a more aggressive look all-in.

Interior and tech

We didn’t know what the interior was going to look like but, with the covers off, it seemingly follows the usual modern car style of lots of screens and tech with typically slick design. A fabric called Softwrap features heavily throughout the interior, Audi hoping this restores its reputation for more premium feeling interiors than its equivalents elsewhere in the wider VW family. Magnetic fasteners developed with Fidlock (ask a cyclist!) offer quick and convenient ways to configure cupholders, storage, charging cable bags and tie-downs according to your needs, meanwhile. Tech-wise you get paired screens angled towards the driver, combining an 11.9-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus and 12.8-inch MMI touch-screen, what physical switches remain repositioned from the centre console to behind the steering wheel and within easy reach. Options – and there will be plenty – include 30-colour ambient lighting with animated display, a large panoramic roof and two additional levels of audio system up to and including a 660-watt Sonos surround sound set-up.

Batteries/range

The A2 e-tron shares foundations with the Volkswagen ID.3, albeit further adapted by Audi with a real emphasis on range and efficiency. Brace yourself for some numbers but this is the way the range is structured, the A2 e-tron 170 PS (the German designation for horsepower) and 190 PS versions using smaller LFP batteries, each tailored to their respective outputs. The smaller of the two in the 190 PS is probably the one for urban dwellers and commuters, but even this can do 262 miles on a full charge. A fancier 84kWh NMC battery powers the 231 PS and 326 PS versions, the former tuned for efficiency while the latter is more focused on performance. Need more stats? Probably not, but if you’re still reading the bigger battery offers faster DC charging on the public network as well as offering greater range, the 231 PS symbolically nudging over 400 miles (by a single mile) by Audi’s claims.

Price and release

Monthly lease and finance rates are probably the more relevant measure of cost, but bottom-line price is still a useful comparison and Audi has confirmed the UK A2 e-tron line-up starts at £32,200.
