The Audi A2 is reborn as a modern-age electric hatchback

The original Audi A2 arrived at the turn of the millennium ready to take the world by storm. It was compact, eye-catching and optimised for fuel efficiency, but it was expensive, so it wasn’t the best-seller Audi had hoped for. Now, the A2 is back and this time its electric. The all-new A2 e-tron will be a five-door hatchback and the smallest electric car in Audi’s range. Audi’s CEO, Gernot Döllner, promises it will be an “efficient, compact and confident” electric car and while Audi hasn't confirmed how much the A2 e-tron will cost, we hope pricing will be much more competitive this time around.

Design and models available
The A2 e-tron picks up where the original A2 left off with compact proportions and an unwavering focus on efficiency. While we have yet to see the A2 e-tron without its snazzy camouflage, the rounded bonnet and swooping roofline create a silhouette which is very reminiscent of the old A2. We don’t know much about the trims and available option yet, but we do know Audi has done everything it can to make the A2 e-tron as slippery as possible helping it to glide through the air and achieve around 4.85 miles/kWh.
Interior and tech
Audi is keeping the interior hidden for now but expect a similar look to the latest A3 or Q3 which both feature Audi’s latest infotainment system, a digital driver display and a curved central touch-screen.
Batteries/range
The A2 e-tron will borrow parts from the wider VW Group and share its foundations with the Volkswagen ID.3, however Audi has adapted the drive system to eke out as much range as possible. By tinkering with the software, electric motor and transmission, Audi reckons it has increased efficiency by 10 per cent. We don’t know how this will translate into real-world range just yet, though we’d expect it to be in the 300-mile ballpark.
Price and release
The A2 e-tron will be the entry-level model in Audi’s electric range, and we’d expect it to start at around £35,000 but we will have to wait for the full reveal later this year when we’ll hear more.

Within the wider Volkswagen Group the A2 e-tron will be up against the Volkwagen ID.3 Neo and the Cupra Born. Beyond its immediate relations the A2 e-tron will have plenty of competition from the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 3, the freshly updated Renault Megane E-Tech, the all-new Nissan Leaf and more.
