For decades the 911 sports car was the definitive Porsche product. But in a sign of the times Porsche actually sold more electric cars last year than it did 911s, driven by the huge success of the Taycan. Indeed, this fully electric model doubled its sales since 2021, contributing to a record year for Porsche even amid the challenges of Covid, chip shortages and the rest.
Here Rory goes for a spin in the latest version, the Taycan Sport Turismo. Sport what? Well, the Taycan launched as a sleek all-wheel drive saloon (or four-door coupe, if you prefer) before the range expanded to include a rear-wheel drive version as well. Then we got the Cross Turismo, a kind of jacked-up, SUV-inspired version of the Taycan with an estate body, rugged panels, extra ride height and a tough, go-anywhere attitude.

Still with us? The Sport Turismo combines both into a single package, so it has the regular Taycan’s sporty on-road stance and handling but the Cross Turismo’s more practical estate body.
The range starts at a relatively reasonable sounding £74,000 for the 408 horsepower Sport Turismo, progresses through the increasingly faster and more powerful 4S Sport Turismo, GTS Sport Turismo and Turbo Sport Turismo before reaching its pinnacle in the incredible 762 horsepower, £140,000 Turbo S Sport Turismo. Capable of hitting 0-62mph in just 2.8 seconds with its launch control function and powering on to a top speed of 162mph this is one monster performance EV. So, guess which one Rory tries to drive through a snow drift in this video? Yes, of course he went for the Turbo S…

As you’ll see, that much power and a snowy mountain road make for an interesting combination but also a very good test of whether that much potency really can be tamed by the Taycan’s sophisticated all-wheel drive system and Porsche’s handling expertise. Let’s just say if the Winter Olympics have whetted your appetite for extreme, snow-bound sports Rory has grabbed the torch and run with it here.
