Electrifying an iconic petrolhead brand is a challenge manufacturers are responding to in many and various ways. Jaguar is going progressive futurist wacky, Ferrari is channelling Apple vibes by hiring iPhone designer Jony Ives to design its new Luce and BMW M is … doing BMW. Just electric. Having already dabbled with hybrids with the new M5 and the controversial XM this new M Concept Neue Klasse is more like red meat for traditional fans who might previously have bought an M3 or M2. But are finally coming round to the idea that electric motors might just be able to deliver the same levels of fun and excitement. Here’s how!

• M Concept Neue Klasse builds on the same tech powering the impressive iX3 and new i3 ‘electric 3 Series’
• Four motors means power to each wheel can be controlled independently for maximum grip … and fun
• No word yet on range but the 100kWh battery should be good for a few laps of the track!
• More to follow on power outputs and performance
• Again, watch this space on the likely price and on-sale date!

Design and models available
We’re out at the Le Mans 24 Hour race to learn more about the BMW M Concept Neue Klasse and will report back on what we learn in due course. For now it seems that, like the combustion M3s that came before, it’s basically a ruded up version of a more everyday BMW saloon. In this case the source material is the new i3, the four-door twist on the next-gen Neue Klasse tech launched with the iX3, and the (thankfully) slicker design language it’s introduced.

Interior and tech
Because it’s a concept at the moment BMW can go full track car here, explaining the four racing style bucket seats with full harnesses and a stripped back version of the Panoramic Vision iDrive system with its full-width display between the dashboard and windscreen. BMW also says the M Concept Neue Klasse will use the sustainable natural fibre technology it’s previewed previously, this a greener alternative to regular carbon fibre but just as light and strong.

Batteries/range

We’ll get back to you! We do know the M Concept Neue Klasse has a 100kWh battery, but the car is built more for speed than efficiency. So, if you want 500 miles between charges you’re best sticking with the regular i3! In performance terms this already has nearly 500 horsepower so we’ll be expecting quite a bit more for the M Concept Neue Klasse.

Price and release
It’s still being described as a concept, so hold your fire on this one for the moment!

What other cars from BMW are due this year?
The i3 saloon on which the M Concept Neue Klasse is seemingly based will be the next car launching on this exciting new platform, and if it’s even half as good as the iX3 we’re already looking forward to it!

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?
BMW’s arch-rival Mercedes is going all-in with the crazy fast  AMG GT 4-Door, which is going all-out on pure power. The BMW alternative looks a little sharper and more track focused at this stage so it will be interesting to see how this plays out for real.
