Porsche has had huge success with the Macan, the baby SUV became its biggest selling car through its ability to attract new buyers to the brand by appealing to a new generation of younger customers, and especially women. With this all-new version the Macan has gone all-electric, and Porsche hopes it will still be the go-to for anyone looking for a car that can offer both practicality and sporting prowess. Where Porsche’s first electric car, the Taycan, was a brand new concept the Macan is a reinvention of an existing model so the pressure is on to prove this new model still has the things people loved about the original. With that in mind Porsche highlights the versatility of the new Macan. In addition to having a 2,000 kg towing capacity and ability to cope with a variety of different terrains, Porsche promises the Macan will still offer the engaging driving experience you would expect.
• The new Macan transforms the model into an electric car, and it is Porsche’s first electric SUV • Making the most of electrification, the new Macan will be all-wheel drive, more spacious than the previous model and have the latest features, such as an augmented reality head-up display • The new Macan has an official range of up to 381 miles • The Macan Turbo will have 639 horsepower and a 0-62 mph time of 3.3 seconds • Available to order now with deliveries expected in the second half of the year • The Macan 4 will start from £69,800, while the Macan Turbo will be priced from £95,000

Design and models available

In terms of looks, the design still resembles the previous Macan but with sleeker lines. The aerodynamics of the car have been optimised for range, making the Macan one of the most streamlined SUVs on the market. This is helped by design features like an adaptive rear spoiler. There are some new paint options too, like ‘Provence’, the dreamy lilac shade featured in the press images.
Porsche has announced that the new Macan will start with two model options, the Macan 4 and higher performance Macan Turbo. Both models will have all-wheel drive with two electric motors. Porsche claims its latest traction control system can respond to changing road conditions five times faster than conventional systems for better handling. If you chose the Turbo model you will also get air suspension as standard, with a more obvious distinction between comfort and performance driving modes depending on whether you prioritise luxury or driving dynamics. Whilst the new Macan is longer than the previous model, rear-axle steering results in a smaller turning circle, helping you manoeuvre around town easily and giving improved handling at higher speeds.

Interior and tech

Having been designed from the start as an electric car there is more space inside for luggage and passengers than before. In addition to the sizeable main boot it now has an 84 litre ‘frunk’ under the bonnet which will likely be a useful place to store charging cables. Passengers now sit slightly lower in the car, which will help the new Macan to feel sportier than the previous model and those in the back get more leg room.
Porsche knows how to make a good quality interior, and we are pleased to see that despite all the modern screens, of which you can have up to three, physical controls will remain for the air vents and temperature controls. These sit beneath the 10.9-inch central display, and you have the option to add another 10.9-inch display just for the passenger where they can download third-party apps from the new Porsche App Centre. For the driver, there’s a 12.6-inch curved instrument cluster and a head-up display with augmented reality. This can project things like your navigation directions into the real world up to 10 metres into the distance. There is also a new infotainment system with a “Hey Porsche” voice assistant and LED ambient lighting that doubles as a form of communication, showing things like warnings, greetings, charging progress. Porsche says these features are all designed to make your new Macan customisable so hopefully you will be able to find the combination of settings that work for you. The move towards electric cars often inspires brands to think about sustainability. Porsche mentions the new Macan will have ‘ecological materials’ in some parts of the interior, however it hasn’t yet gone into detail on what these materials are, or what proportion of the parts are made from them.

Batteries/range

The new Macan is the first Porsche to be built on its new electric platform. It will come with a 100kWh battery with a useable 95kWh capacity. More on what that actually means here but according to Porsche this will provide up to 381 miles of range for Macan 4 and 367 miles for the more powerful, performance-focused Macan Turbo. It will be interesting to see how the battery performs in real driving conditions, especially if you drive the Macan with gusto, but the Macan’s range should be more than capable of covering most journeys. When you do need to charge, like the Taycan, the Macan can receive up to 270kW when fast charging, which in optimum conditions means you can go from 10-80 percent in around 21 mins.
Naturally being a Porsche, the new Macan is designed to provide a sporty driving experience, so it’s fast. With launch control, the Macan 4 does 0-62 mph in 5.2 seconds while the Macan Turbo with its 639 horsepower, can do it in 3.3 seconds.

What other cars from Porsche are due this year?

In addition to the electric Macan, we expect that Porsche will be giving its other models such as the 911 and Panamera a mid-life refresh this year.

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

With many brands electrifying their old favourites, the electric Macan will soon have the bigger all electric Range Rover
to contend with. This will be in addition to the many other premium electric SUVs such as AMG versions of the Mercedes EQE SUV, BMW iX and Polestar 3.
