If Audi seems to have been a little quiet of late get ready for a bit more noise, this new Sportback version of the Q6 SUV e-tron just one of a flood of new models coming our way. Based on all-new electrical architecture designed in partnership with Porsche, this new Sportback follows Audi’s established pattern of offering a coupe-style option to its SUV models, slotting between the Q4 e-tron and the posher – but arguably somewhat outdated – Q8 e-tron line-up.
• Where the smaller Q4 is based on Volkswagen foundations this Q6 has been built with Porsche and shares much with the new Macan • The model range, badging and power outputs broadly match the Q6 SUV e-tron but with that coupe-style Sportback bodyshape • That sleeker roofline actually helps range to a degree, the Q6 Sportback e-tron performance version with the bigger of the two batteries going 402 miles by official stats – a full 10 miles more than an Q6 SUV e-tron of the same trim • Take your pick between more range-efficient rear-motor, rear-wheel drive versions in a choice of two battery packs or faster quattro branded all-wheel drive options, the flagship SQ6 hitting 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds • The Q6 Sportback e-tron is available from November, with the first deliveries to UK buyers in April 2025 • The Q6 Sportback e-tron costs an additional £2,500 over equivalent Q6 SUV e-tron models, with prices starting at £62,475 and climbing to a burly £95,450 for the SQ6

Design and models available

Swoopy roofline apart the Sportback follows the same progression of increasing poshness and performance as the SUV equivalent. Meaning you start with the single-motor Q6 Sportback e-tron with the smaller of the two battery packs, next step being the same but in ‘performance’ trim with the bigger battery. If range is your priority this is the one for you. Next step on the ladder is the faster quattro and then the SQ6. All follow the same Sport, S line and Edition 1 trim hierarchy, except the SQ6 which is only available in Edition 1 for the time being. Visually you’ll immediately tell your Sportback from SUV by the roof, which is considerably lower and uses a shape inspired by the original TT coupe for a look Audi describes as “more progressive and sportier” than the regular Q6.

Interior and tech

Again, see Q6 SUV e-tron for what you get on the inside, just with slightly less rear headroom and bootspace! Saying that practicality isn’t affected too badly by the Sportback shape, though we’ll again take issue with Audi charging extra for the useful 64-litre ‘frunk’ as part of its ‘storage pack’. Tech-wise it’s all newest-latest, with an imposing panoramic display for the Audi MMI interface, augmented with the ‘dynamic interaction light’ sweeping across the dash if you’re happy paying extra (again) for the Sound & Vision pack. Family buyers can meanwhile take reassurance in Audi’s boast of class-leading occupant protection results from its crash-testing by safety body Euro NCAP, the Q6 especially praised for the way it looks after child passengers.

Batteries/range

Less ‘regular and large’ when it comes to the battery options and more ‘big and even bigger’, with even the standard Q6 Sportback e-tron having an 83kWh pack while everything from ‘performance’ and above gets 100kWh and faster charging. If you can find a power point powerful enough you’ll have to hope for a quick turnaround at the coffee counter given how quickly the car can potentially replenish itself, though this will be down to the local infrastructure as much as anything. The more efficient shape meanwhile sees the Q6 Sportback e-tron performance to beyond 400 miles (just!) by official numbers, with the quattro and SQ6 instead putting greater emphasis on performance. Even the latter can do 367 miles by the same standards, though.

Price and release

You’ll be able to order your Q6 Sportback e-tron from November, with first UK deliveries expected in the spring of 2025. Like-for-like expect a £2,500 premium over the equivalent SUV version of the same, though the starting price is still a bit less than the Macan with which it shares its foundations even if the Porsche (inevitably) has the more impressive power and performance stats.

What other cars from Audi are due this year?

Lots! The A4 will be replaced by a new car, now rebranded A5 as part of Audi’s new naming structure while the electric foundations under this Q6 will also power the new A6. Not ready to go electric yet? Fear not, there’s also a new Q5 coming!

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

Along with the Macan it’s based on the Q6 Sportback e-tron is part of a new generation of electric cars using more sophisticated and powerful batteries and motors for improved range and charging performance. Audi has stolen a bit of a march over the pending BMW equivalents due next year as part of the Neu Klasse range but the upper-medium electric SUV segment remains vibrant, with lots of new entrants from brands both fresh and familiar.
