We’ve wrapped up another busy year at Auto Trader and, throughout 2022, we’ve matched millions of car buyers with their dream cars.
In the past year, we’ve had various different cars advertised on our site including cars from footballers, singers and the royal family; some fast cars, some ultra-luxurious to some funky-looking cars. Here we take a look at trends that defined search habits on Auto Trader in 2022, including the most popular car adverts, the colour of the year for cars and seasonal effects on car searches.

Most viewed electric car

Electric cars are becoming more and more popular each year. In 2022, the number of electric cars sold overtook the number of diesel cars sold in the UK for the time ever according to SMMT. The increasing number of options available today and the improvement in the infrastructure have helped support the rise in popularity of electric cars.
The MG ZS was the most viewed electric car on Auto Trader while the MG4 was the seventh most viewed new electric model in 2022 – definitely a good year for MG. The MG ZS is a small SUV that has been praised for its value for money, as well as its cabin space and comfort. There are thousands of electric cars you can search through on Auto Trader.

Hottest heatwave cars

Remember when a sweltering heatwave swept across the UK?
When temperatures hit 30 degrees in mid-June, over 2.4 million people looked at convertibles in just seven days. The Porsche 911 was particularly popular during this time on Auto Trader. The Porsche 911 is a gorgeous piece of engineering. The coupe costs over £150,000 but it promises power, prestige and performance, and a proper driving experience for the sports car enthusiasts. While the Porsche 911 is a great one for summer driving, here are a few other picks to enjoy the sun in.

The warmest car for the coldest weather

2022 kept us on our toes when it came to the weather – we experienced extreme winds, heat and cold.
When a snowstorm hit in December, ad views for 4x4 cars increased. The most popular 4x4 was the Ford Ranger at that time, which saw an increase of 75% in ad views.

The end of an era

After nearly 50 years of the Fiesta, Ford decided to discontinue the supermini in 2022. The day Ford announced this, Fiestas saw an increase of 6.8% in searches on Auto Trader.
Ford is looking at electrifying their portfolio so there'll be many new Fords to look forward to. In the meantime, you may not be able to get your hands on a new Ford Fiesta anymore, but you can still find some used gems on Auto Trader.
