In possibly the least surprising result of the competition, Dacia has picked up our Best Value New Car award with the Sandero. It’s the third year in a row that Dacia has taken the award, and the second straight win for the Sandero specifically.
It’s easy to make a case for the Sandero’s value, because with a starting price below £14,000 – and even an LPG option to reduce running costs – it far undercuts most of its rivals. But to write off today’s Sandero as just ‘cheap and cheerful’ is a mistake. The latest version is a much higher quality car than the previous two versions. Sure, the ‘Essential’ version is basic – manual rear windows, remember those? – but from mid-spec upwards it feels very well-equipped. Fun fact: if you pick the most expensive Sandero, a Stepway Extreme, and tick EVERY options box, it’ll still cost less than the cheapest Toyota Yaris. As one owner said, it’s “cheap to buy but loaded with bits such as climate control and heated seats.” It’s real-world value at its best, which is why it beat the Hyundai i20 and the MG HS, both great value cars themselves, to our award.
