Electrification is coming, but not everyone is ready to commit to a fully battery-powered vehicle quite yet and hybrids of various types are an important stepping stone for many drivers. With the flexibility of a regular internal combustion powered car but cleaner running and zero emissions on electric power, hybrids are an ideal halfway house for many, and getting better all the time.

Toyota’s early lead in this field is reflected in the fact the RAV4 makes the shortlist, along with the Hyundai Ioniq. But our winner is the BMW 3 Series. Available in rear- or xDrive all-wheel drive, the plug-in 330e can cover more than 30 miles on electric power alone, meaning zero emissions motoring around town and very attractive tax breaks for company drivers. But with nearly 300 horsepower when combining the petrol engine and electric motors, and 0-62mph in less than six seconds, it’s also got a real spring in its step, putting an electrified twist on BMW’s traditional sporting image.

“It embraces everything you need in a car - performance, practicality, economy, quality and driver satisfaction,” said one happy owner. Need we say more!
