The five-seater Ford E-Tourneo Courier shrugs off the usual ‘van-derived’ hallmarks with its car-like driving habits and good use of space

Based on the popular E-Transit Courier panel van, the E-Tourneo Courier MPV has joined Ford’s line of Tourneo van-derived cars. While the Courier might have the look of a van conversion, underneath it all are the bones of the Ford Puma so it's more 'car like' than the looks suggest. This means it drives well, and can carry five adult passengers in its spacious (albeit slightly sparse) cabin. The only drawbacks are its maximum range of just over 170 miles (more like 130 on the motorway), its limited luggage space, and the fact that cars like the Dacia Jogger Hybrid are more affordable and can carry more passengers. But for those wanting a smart and compact all-electric people carrier, the Ford E-Tourneo Courier is definitely worth a look. We had a lot of fun zipping about town in the model we tested, and the two-tone white/green colourway turned more than a few heads! It’ll tick a lot of boxes for a lot of people, especially those looking to upgrade from a compact family car to something just a little bit bigger.

Charging is VERY quick... we found getting from 30% to 80% charge took around 20 minutes
While the E-Tourneo Courier’s maximum range of up to 170 miles is reliable in the urban or town setting, bank on 120-130 miles on the motorways. The vehicle’s battery size is only 43kWh, which means longer trips in the UK will require charging stops where you’ll be at the mercy of public chargers and their varying costs. However, Ford’s Power Promise package does make things a little easier by providing a free home charger and up to 10,000 miles of free public charging credit … although you’ve only got until the end of March this year to take advantage of that offer. Charging is VERY quick, and we found going from 30 per cent to 80 per cent took around 20 minutes on a rapid charger. Plus, while the £30K starting price is higher than some competing compact MPVs, a good finance or lease deal will help break that down.

Reliability of a Ford E-Tourneo Courier

Your nearest Ford servicing location is only a stone’s throw away, and Ford knows this is a major feather in their cap
Every Ford E-Tourneo Courier comes with an eight-year/100,000-mile battery warranty, a three-year/60,000-mile manufacturer warranty, and two years of roadside assistance… which is very standard and reassuring. Service intervals are every two years, and that’s a schedule that must be stuck to if you want to keep the warranty intact. Being a new addition to the Tourneo lineup means it’s hard to comment on the car’s long-term reliability, but Ford garages are everywhere in the UK. Your nearest servicing or repair location is probably only a stone’s throw away, and Ford knows this is a major feather in its cap.

Safety for a Ford E-Tourneo Courier

Safety spec changes slightly between the two trim levels, so check the one you're considering has the features you need
The latest Ford E-Tourneo Courier has a four-star Euro NCAP safety rating and boasts a range of useful safety features. Standard highlights include parking sensors, traffic sign recognition, lane keeping, emergency braking… you know, the usual stuff. Optional upgrades include cross-traffic alerts, blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. Safety spec changes slightly between the two trim levels – Titanium and Active – so check the vehicle information for the one you're considering thoroughly before signing on the line.

How comfortable is the Ford E-Tourneo Courier

We like how the E-Tourneo Courier shrugs off the feeling of being a van-derived car by making good use of its interior space
Comfort levels don’t change significantly between trim levels, the E-Tourneo Courier’s interior placing more emphasis on making good use of the space than crowding it with tech. There’s more than enough storage with cubbies on the dash, cup holders on the centre console and a shelf above the driver’s head. The driver and front passenger seats are comfortable and fully adjustable, and heated in the model we tested. The steering wheel is also heated, which we made good use of in the colder weather. The back seats are roomy, with plenty of legroom and enough headroom for six-foot-tall adults. Boot space is limited with five passengers, but you can drop the 60/40-split back seats and suddenly you’ve got enough room to carry a two-seat sofa (trust us on that). One of the nicest convenience features is a pop-out storage box in the boot space, perfect for storing things like a pair of wellies. What we like is how the E-Tourneo Courier shrugs off the feeling of being a van-derived car… being a Puma underneath means it’s about as close to a car that a van has ever been!

Features of the Ford E-Tourneo Courier

Its feature list keeps the E-Tourneo Courier comfortable and simple... two words that describe the car as a whole perfectly
The E-Tourneo Courier is available in two trim levels, with different features available on each. The Titanium trim level comes with a bit more comfort and style, including unique 17-inch alloy wheels, a wrapped steering wheel, a wireless charging pad under the infotainment screen, and rain-sensing wipers. While the Active trim is more for outdoorsy people, with 17-inch wheels, front and rear skid plates, and the full Driver Assistance tech pack. In every version you get a 12-inch digital driver’s display behind the steering wheel and a 12-inch infotainment touch-screen in the centre of the dashboard. Ford’s Sync operating system is fine, sometimes a bit fiddly, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both supported. You’ll also find a raft of USB and power connections inside the cabin to keep your devices charged. Ford is good at keeping things simple and comfortable… two perfect words to describe the E-Tourneo Courier’s features.

Power for a Ford E-Tourneo Courier

Some cars can’t do one-pedal driving confidently, but the E-Tourneo Courier can
The E-Tourneo Courier’s 136 horsepower motor is very nippy. We had enormous fun driving on the wiggly country roads surrounding Hemel Hempstead, and found town driving a doddle thanks to the car’s good turning circle. Motorway driving on the M1 was not as fun (surprise surprise), and we felt some range anxiety as the miles ticked down on a cold, wet day but seasonal mental state aside we still enjoyed the ride. A notable feature is the dedicated one-pedal driving setting, which engages the vehicle’s highest regenerative braking setting. It’s really good and slows significantly when you lift your foot off the accelerator pedal. Some cars can’t do one-pedal driving confidently, but the E-Tourneo Courier can. Also, we noted good retention of range using this feature while driving on town roads, so keep that in mind.
