Ford's ST badge stands for Sports Technologies and is used by models like the Fiesta, Focus and Puma ST which have been developed and uprated by Ford Performance. Typical ST features include more powerful engines, stiffer suspension, unique bodykits and driver-focused tech like launch control and rev-matching for smoother gearshifts. ST Line models in the regular Ford range have sporty bodykits and other trim differences but don't have the same level of modification. Ford RS also operates as part of Ford Performance and is dedicated to building cars that go a step above ST in terms of performance and tech. RS models don't come around too often, this exclusivity and a passionate following among fans making them very desirable indeed.
Ford PowerShift is a type of automatic gearbox offered on some of the manufacturer's models. In common with many modern transmissions, it uses so-called 'dual-clutch' technology to effectively pre-select gears and make shifting faster and smoother than a conventional automatic while also being much more efficient. In use it operates much like a regular automatic, meaning no clutch pedal and a simple selector – put it into D for drive and go! Some models may feature different modes to change the response and feel of the shifts, while others may let you select your own gears via the shifter or paddles on the wheel.
Ford's in-car entertainment and information system is called Ford SYNC. The communication system is touch and voice-controlled and lets you play music, make calls, get directions and weather updates, find car parks, charging points and other information through the SYNC services. SYNC 4 and SYNC 4A are the latest versions available for 2021 models. Keeping your Ford SYNC updated is easy – simply select a recurring day and time of the week when you want SYNC to update automatically each week.
Ford's keyless entry system, called KeyFree System, senses when your key fob is near the car and automatically unlocks the car. You may notice the wing mirrors fold out once the car's been unlocked. Once in the car, you can keep the key in your pocket and to start the engine you simply depress the clutch, push the start button and away you go. If you don't wish to use Ford's keyless entry, you can disable it by going on vehicle settings in your car and deselecting KeyFree. You can disable the keyless system only on selected Ford models such as the Mach-E, Ford Fiesta and 2017 or later Ford Focus.
EcoBoost is a brand name applied to a range of Ford petrol engines featuring turbocharging and direct fuel injection for improved power and efficiency. Typically this means you can use a much smaller – and more fuel-friendly – engine to achieve comparable performance to bigger ones of a previous era. This is known as engine downsizing and common across the industry. While the focus on EcoBoost is on efficiency it can also be tuned for improved performance, as it is in ST models.
