Just how fast is the new Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance? Fast enough that it will go from zero to 62mph in less time than it takes to say its name, for starters. But for a more practical demonstration of what 816 horsepower and 1,420Nm of combined internal combustion and electric power can do strap in alongside Rory. Or, at least, do it in spirit via YouTube. Because, for reasons that will become clear, the actual passenger seat is occupied by a frozen chicken…
Launched last year at the Shanghai Grand Prix, this new plug-in version of the AMG GT combines practical lessons learned from Mercedes’ hybrid F1 cars, where powerful petrol engines and electric motors work in perfect harmony for the ultimate in speed. Same in the GT, just with the creature comforts you’d expect of any road-going Mercedes. Of course, in conventional hybrids plug-in technology is harnessed as a supposedly sustainable alternative to pure combustion power. But this is AMG. And while the GT E Performance can cover around eight miles on electric power alone (enough to sneak out for an early Sunday morning blast without waking the rest of the household at least) the real focus is on ultimate power and performance. Of which the GT has plenty. Is that enough to justify a price that could have you in something apparently more exotic, like an Aston Martin Vantage or Ferrari Roma?
