Geely is the Chinese owner of Volvo, Polestar and Lotus, and it recently arrived as a standalone brand in the UK. It currently offers two electric cars – the family-focused EX5 and the compact EX2 – and the Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid. Now it is using the Paris Motor Show to launch the Monjaro EM-i, a larger plug-in hybrid to rival the Honda CR-V and BYD Seal U.
This is what we know so far…
What is the Monjaro EM-i?
The Monjaro EM-i sounds suspiciously like something you can pick up at the chemist, but it is in fact Geely’s equivalent of a Skoda Kodiaq, Mazda CX-60 or Omoda 9 and its name is apparently inspired by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Presumably this has something to do with the Monjaro being Geely’s new flagship – though it could be Geely’s product managers have had Toto’s greatest hits on repeat in the office.
What about engines?
The EM-i bit of the name is not particularly clear either, but it is what Geely calls a ‘Super Hybrid’ system. This follows the same vein as other Chinese brands like BYD and the Chery/Omoda/Jaecoo group who all offer plug-in hybrids with a substantial all-electric range and, for the most part, the petrol engine spends its time topping up the battery, so it almost feels like driving a fully electric car – find out what it’s like to live with an Omoda 7 ‘Super Hybrid’ here.
What’s the interior like?
We will find out more in due course, but Geely is promising a “premium SUV experience”, so expect lots of space and plenty of mod-cons.
