Toyota launched the original bZ4X electric SUV in 2022, and this year’s new model features a range of upgrades that will “strengthen the model’s performance capabilities and enrich the ownership experience”... so, it looks nicer and performs better.
Here’s everything we know so far.
Here’s everything we know so far.
- Two new battery options – 57.7kWh and 73.1kWh - offering up to 356 miles of range by Toyota's numbers
- The vehicle will be available in front-wheel and all-wheel drive versions
- All-wheel drive versions will now be able to tow up to 1,500kg - double the original bZ4X’s capability
- The updated bZ4X will feature Toyota’s new battery pre-conditioning function (designed to improve charging performance in most climates) and a new 22kW AC on-board charger
- It’s had a bit of a makeover on the inside and outside
- The new model is scheduled for European launch sometime after summer 2025
- UK model range and specifications are still to be announced
Design and models available

Even with UK models and specifications still to be announced, it’s probably safe to assume there will be a few trim levels to choose from – the current model has three. But what we know for sure is there will be three drivetrains – two front-wheel drive and one all-wheel drive, with the front-wheel drive versions available with each new size of battery and the all-wheel drive version available with just the largest battery. Beyond that, the car’s been updated inside and out, looks a bit sleeker, feels a bit snugger, it’s got new suspension, better sound baffling, and so on.
Interior and tech
The new model is not going to feel a million miles away from the current one, but it does look a little different on the outside, and feels safer and more comfortable on the inside. The front is definitely sharper and we were told it is more aerodynamic because of that. Inside is a fully-updated suite of tech and materials, with the standout features being wireless charging mats for two devices, a new digital driver information display screen behind the steering wheel, and an imposing 14-inch infotainment screen with integrated navigation systems likely to be fitted as standard across the range.
Batteries and range

Okay, the batteries and range we have concrete information on. Customers will have a choice of either a 57.7kWh or 73.1kWh battery, with the 57.7kWh battery exclusive to front-wheel drive models and the 73.1kWh battery available in front- and all-wheel drive versions. We’re told maximum range is expected to be confirmed at 356 miles (depending on trim and battery size chosen), but at time of publishing this had not been verified.
Price and release

The current bZ4X retails from around £43,000-50,000, which is about right for a battery-electric SUV of its size. That may change with the new model, but without concrete information on UK specifications, models or trims, it’s very hard to predict how much you’ll need to spend just yet.
What other cars from Toyota are due this year?
Aside from the new bZ4X you’re reading about right now, Toyota announced two more new vehicles launching in 2025. These are the battery-electric versions of the C-HR and Urban Cruiser SUVs, both scheduled for launch in or around Q4 2025.
What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?
When the current bZ4X launched, it was competing for attention against vehicles like the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E and Kia EV6. It will continue to compete with new versions of those vehicles and any other brand launching battery-electric SUVs into the UK marketplace. As ever, size them all up, compare their best features and pick that one that works best for you.
