New Aion UT Coming Soon: Specs, price and release info

Aion brings a second car to the UK – the compact UT hatchback will go big on space and value

So, you’ve heard of BYD, Jaecoo and Omoda, but what about Aion? No? Well, let’s fill you in. Aion is another Chinese brand which is new to the UK, but well-established in its home country. Its parent company, GAC, has over seventy years of automotive experience and it has even partnered with familiar names like Honda and Toyota. Aion arrived earlier this year with its all-electric V family SUV and now it is bringing us the UT, a compact hatchback to rival the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, MG4 and BYD Dolphin. While its looks may not grab you, Aion’s “Great 8 Promise” which provides an eight-year warranty, plus eight years of servicing, roadside assistance and MOTs could make the UT an appealing option.

Design and models available

The overall design is very unassuming and closely resembles the Geely EX2. However, the UT will be available in five colours and there are some distinguishing features such as the ice cube shaped indicators and headlights which Aion says are inspired by owl eyes. To make sure the UT is ready to take on British roads Aion says it has made various tweaks to the UT’s suspension set-up, so we look forward to finding out whether these modifications pay off.

Interior and tech

Inside the layout is also very similar to the Geely EX2. However, there is just one trim level, so all cars come with a large 14.6-inch central touchscreen which controls most of the car’s features and useful touches like heated front seats and a 360-degree camera. There will be the option of a Premium Pack which adds a panoramic rood, wireless charging, a powered tailgate and a ventilated driver’s seat.

Batteries/range

The UT will have a 60kWh battery with an official range of up to 268 miles. While Aion claims this is class leading, given the UT’s length and the size of its battery it could reasonable be compared the Renault Megane E-Tech or the Hyundai Ioniq 3 which both have slightly longer maximum ranges by official figures. The UT will be able to DC charge at a maximum of 87kW meaning top-ups from 30 to 80 per cent could take around 24 minutes which is on the slower side.

Price and release

We don’t have confirmed prices yet, but Aion has said the UT will start at under £30,000. It will be available to order from September with the first customer deliveries expected in October.

What other cars from Aion are due this year?

We are all becoming very familiar with the concept of ‘China speed’ and the rate with which new cars are being brought to market. As such, we expect Aion has plenty more electric cars up its sleeve and it has also promised a plug-in hybrid version of the V which is due arrive next year.

What other upcoming cars will this compete with?

The Aion UT will have plenty of competition including newcomers like the Geely EX2, Skoda Epiq, VW ID. Cross and Hyundai Ioniq 3 and more established options including the Renault Megane E-Tech, Cupra Born and the MG4.
