Try, Buy, Dream – November 2024

This month’s selection of cars to try out, buy or simply dream about

Trying a car has never been easier - lots of car brands now offer subscription services on a monthly basis, with no down payment or exit fee so you can swap in and out of different models with minimal notice. Or you can lock in for longer, on a leasing deal, which still means you just pay a monthly amount and hand the car back at the end of the deal. Additionally, some brands provide 24-hour test drives to give you a chance to get to know the car before you commit.
Then there’s the Buy choice, whether it’s paying for the car with cash or signing up to a fixed term finance deal with the option to buy the car at the end. These are cars that make good long-term sense. And finally our fave section, for dreamers everywhere. The new luxe stuff, the wishlist option or the treat yourself splurge, depending on how big that imagined windfall might be. Enjoy this month’s offerings!

Try

Blue Ford Explorer front driving along road

Ford Explorer

With its boxy looks and airy interior, the Ford Explorer is a mid-size electric family car which shares foundations with Volkswagen’s ID.4. The Explorer has its own identity and makes a practical car choice thanks a central ‘Mega Console’, while as an extra party trick its infotainment screen slides up and down revealing a lockable cubby behind. It’s currently available as a long-range model with an official range of over 300 miles, and you can already order a standard range version which is set to arrive next year. If you are interested in going electric, but aren’t sure if it’s for you, Ford is offering 48-hour test drives of its plug-in vehicles until the end of the month, giving you a perfect opportunity try one out before going all-in.

Buy

Pale green Kia EV3 front driving by the sea

Kia EV3

Kia is onto a winner with the EV3. Balancing style and substance, the EV3 provides all you could possibly need from a medium-size electric car and even manages to undercut rivals such as the Volkswagen ID.3 on price. There’s plenty of space for the whole family to travel in comfort and with a range of 270 to 367 miles, depending on the model you choose, the EV3 should fit into most lifestyles with ease. It’s interior features a variety of recycled materials and if you’re especially interested in where they came from there’s a handy QR code to answer your questions. Based on our first impressions we think the EV3 is a fantastic car, and a particularly good choice for any first-time electric car buyers.

Dream

Yellow McLaren W1 front
Red Ferrari F80 front

Ferrari F80 and McLaren W1

We just couldn’t decide which hybrid hypercar we would prefer in our imaginary garage this month, so we are dreaming big with the Ferrari F80 and the McLaren W1. This feels appropriate, given financially driven ‘either/or’ decisions probably won’t be an issue for the target audience, many of whom will likely have orders in for both. For the purposes of comparison, though, where the McLaren has a sleek design with gullwing doors, the Ferrari is more avant-garde with its imposing front visor and “1+” interior layout. Both are born from iconic bloodlines, both are ultra-exclusive, and both combine petrol with electricity to produce mind-blowing acceleration. Yet, despite the incredible performance figures, Ferrari and McLaren each claim they can be used every day. A challenge we like to think we’d be up for.
