Whether you’re after a hardy working vehicle or a go-anywhere leisure vehicle to complement your active lifestyle, a pickup truck could be just the way to go. But which of the wide selection of offer is the best? Well, according to the owners who took part in our survey, it’s the Toyota Hilux, which is the reason the Hilux has been declared as the winner of our Best Pickup award for 2019.
Like all our awards, this category was decided by feedback collated from a survey of more than 60,000 car owners, all of whom rated their car in 16 key areas. That means an Auto Trader New Car Award is a real stamp of approval from people that live with the vehicle day-in, day-out, and it makes each winner a true consumer champion. Among its fellow pickups, the Hilux placed in top spot in no less than six key areas, including looks, durability, power, reliability, safety and the feeling of safety. Here are just a few of the comments owners made about the Hilux…
  • “I like the torque, ground-clearance, ability to go off-road, excellent visibility, ease of driving and excellent reliability.”
  • “It’s a Toyota Hilux, very tough to break. Probably will outlive you if you maintain it properly.”
  • “Very reliable in my rural area, and efficient in my farm, and when I take my family out.”
Our experts are also impressed by the Hilux, and you can see why in our expert review. So much so, in fact, that our experts agree with the great British public, and have awarded the Hilux a place in our best pickup trucks shortlist.
Commenting on the Hilux’s victory in this category, Auto Trader’s road test editor, Ivan Aistrop, said: “The Hilux is renowned across the world as a hardy and practical truck, and it's one of the first models on any prospective pickup customer's list. Its reliability is world-class, it performs both on and off-road, and the double cab version will fit in passengers as well as whatever stuff you happen to be lugging around in the back. All that, and lots of safety kit, too.” Will the Hilux have the tools to take the honours once again in 2020? Or will one of this year’s runners-up – the Volkswagen Amarok and Isuzu D-Max – be able to go one better? If you’re looking for a new vehicle, and you fancy picking up a pickup, you can find or configure your brand new Toyota Hilux on Auto Trader right now.
