Available new from £39,787
Having just reviewed a Citroen Dispatch Crew Van, we were worried that getting behind the wheel of a Peugeot Expert Sport Crew Van would feel underwhelming, but the new eight-speed automatic gearbox and excellent aesthetic upgrades made it feel fresh and striking. Despite platform sharing with all of the other Stellantis medium vans – including the popular Vauxhall Vivaro – the Peugeot vehicles are often seen as the ones that try the hardest to differentiate themselves from their brethren and this one is no different. The Expert Sport Crew Van, therefore, is different enough to be judged on its own merits and worth taking a look at if you’re in the market for an eye-catching dual-role vehicle.
Reasons to buy:
The Expert Sport Crew Van is a great-looking dual-role van
The automatic eight-speed gearbox is incredibly smooth and reliable
Peugeot’s Sport upgrades are striking and modern making this a real head-turner
The Peugeot Expert Sport Crew Van is available in one length – Standard (short wheelbase). The load space volume is 3.2 cubic metres, which is smaller than the standard panel van volume courtesy of the second row of seats and the full bulkhead with glazing. As you’d expect from a crew van, there are two side doors with optionally tinted windows and two rear doors. In the short version you get four lashing points, and payloads of up to 1260kg. Excellently, the Crew Van is just as capable at towing as the panels, with the diesels capable of towing 2500kg braked and 750kg unbraked. It’s a highly practical vehicle for those looking to carry people and cargo, perhaps using it as a personal vehicle too in a dual role.

Interior
The interior of the Expert Sport is superb with striking black pleather and suede materials combined with green stitching everywhere to set off the Sport decals and green effects on the outside. It looks excellent and we loved the head turns of other drivers. The second row of seats features three individually contoured seats with adjustable headrests and two armrests. There’s also a removable storage compartment under the left and centre seats, which can be accessed from the passenger area, and an area for longer cargo items to slide under the right seat accessed from the loading area. In the front you get a passenger bench seat with underseat storage and the driver’s seat. So, six people is your maximum count, but be aware the passenger in the centre seat in the front will encounter leg room issues. This is courtesy of the drive selector switch or gear stick, which is placed on a console that juts out from the dashboard. Some additional features include paddles for regenerative braking selection behind the steering wheel in the electric versions, and gear changes in the diesel automatic version are carried out by using the e-Toggle switch or steering wheel mounted shift paddles. Other than that, the main infotainment screen – which is very sharp but isn’t angled towards the driver – features navigation, mobile phone connectivity and all the settings you’d expect. Manual dual-zone air con is present and can be recirculated into the glovebox to keep your lunch or snacks cool. Despite its similarities with the Citroen Dispatch Crew Van, the Peugeot’s Sport cabin feels more exciting and is a comfortable place to spend time.

Running costs
Pricing is perhaps a little juicy sitting around £40K OTR on diesel versions. Acquisition costs can be mitigated with finance or a good lease deal, so take a look around before you commit. We experienced a decent return on diesel fuel at around 29-35mpg on a long trip to South Wales. In the end, consider the fact that Peugeot vans are the favourites of big fleets like Royal Mail, that doesn’t happen if the van doesn’t do its job affordably.

Reliability
Service intervals are relatively long, set at 32,000 miles or every two years (whichever comes first). There are few major issues reported on the Stellantis medium vans, and platform sharing means spare parts are plentiful if you require work. The three-year warranty is enhanced slightly by the first two years offering unlimited mileage, with the third year capped at 100,000 miles.

Performance
We were impressed with the look and feel of the Sport edition of the Peugeot Expert Sport, particularly how it blends killer looks with outright function. It’s the perfect example of a dual role vehicle, as capable of being a family vehicle as it is a work vehicle.

Ride and handling
The eight-speed automatic gearbox is excellent, and that mated to the 2.0-litre diesel engine chewed up over 400 miles of driving while it was with us. Motorways and roads of all types are no obstacle to this van, with the excellent cruise control and comfort levels being a major highlight. It was a smooth van to drive, with the gearbox handling changing power requirements intelligently. We noticed no dips in power even while dropping speed to negotiate tight country roads. This is a top-class vehicle to drive.

Safety
With a gold NCAP safety rating, the Expert’s safety systems are plentiful. Alongside standard specifications like airbags, ABS, ESC and other ‘normal’ ADAS, it features a remote control ultrasonic security alarm system, deadlocking, an immobiliser, High Beam Assist, Intelligent Speed Assistance, Lane Keeping Assist, Advance Emergency Braking System, Dynamic Surround View, a clever digital rear view mirror and lateral side view, front and rear park assist, Flankguard detection of fixed obstacles, Visiopark 180º, blind spot detection and driver attention alerts. This is also one of the least noisy vans on the market right now. Some vans will scream at you constantly while this one appears to trust you enough to give little reminders – don’t underestimate how welcome this is.

Equipment
The equipment discussed in the other sections of this review are what you get as standard. The options list is also worth a look, with packs adding features that include a rear-view camera feed to the mirror, enhanced safety specifications, glazing on the rear doors and heated front and side windows. These options come at a price (in most cases) so check the spec of the vehicle you’re considering before committing.

Why buy?
You’ll buy the Sport version of the Peugeot Expert Crew Van because you want to drive a vehicle that functions in two roles while looking sharp. It’s a bit pricier than a standard Crew Van, but you’ll know where the money went when you’re driving down the roads, heads are turning and you’re enjoying that responsive eight-speed gearbox.
