Check your bingo cards for ‘BYD launches hybrid powertrain pick-up truck’ because it’s happened! Hot on the heels of the news BYD was converting its Dolphin passenger car into a small van, the Shark will make a few more waves as its first ever pick-up truck. It is built on the company’s Super Hybrid platform with a powertrain that combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine, a 32.2 kWh battery pack and dual electric motors. The truck will cost around £47K (inc VAT) and deliveries are scheduled for late 2026. Also, it’s called ‘Shark’, which sounds cool and continues the long-running aquatic names theme BYD seems to be sticking with. Let’s take a closer look at what it will offer drivers.

How practical is the BYD Shark?

According to the press info, the BYD SHARK is designed to balance the vehicle’s intended uses as a personal and professional vehicle. The load space is comparable in size to most other pick-up trucks, capable of carrying a maximum payload of 790 kg… so it’s not able to be classed as a commercial vehicle for tax purposes, but could still work as one. It is also capable of towing up to 2,500 kg, which puts it behind the Ford Ranger PHEV’s 3,500 kg towing capacity. However, it does feature a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) power socket fed by the vehicle’s blade battery allowing you to plug in and power equipment – whether that’s power tools, a pressure washer or even a coffee machine.

How comfortable is the BYD Shark’s cabin?

BYD is keeping the Shark on a par with other pick-ups by styling the interior more like a full-sized family SUV than a rugged commercial vehicle. The double-cab layout seats five people and has a completely flat rear floor to provide as much leg room as possible. In the front, the cabin features a few premium touches like vegan leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front sports seats, and central grab handles for a bit of added personal stability when driving the vehicle over rough terrain.

The dashboard is dominated by a dual-screen layout, with a huge 15.6-inch infotainment touch-screen and a 10.25-inch digital driver's display. You also get a head-up display, voice assistant, navigation, and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also a 50 W wireless smartphone charging pad and you can pre-condition the cabin’s temperature remotely via the BYD smartphone app. The icing on the cake, we’re told, is a premium 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system for you to pump out the tunes on.

What is the BYD Shark’s hybrid powertrain like?

The BYD Shark brings the company’s Super Hybrid Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) technology to the pick-up truck market for the first time. This system uses a dual-motor setup – a 231PS electric motor on the front axle and a 204PS motor on the rear axle – paired with a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 150PS. Together, the system produces a combined 436PS and 650Nm of torque, allowing the truck to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 5.7 seconds.

Electric power is provided by a 32.2 kWh blade battery integrated directly into the ladder-frame chassis to protect it during off-road driving. The hybrid system is set up to operate primarily as an electric vehicle by using the petrol engine as a generator to charge the battery or power the motors. If you need MORE power the engine and motors will work together, while for sustaining motorway speeds the engine can drive the wheels directly.

What is the BYD Shark like off-road?

The BYD Shark features an intelligent all-wheel-drive system capable of managing traction on all manner of surfaces – including sand, mud, snow, and gravel – and overall comfort should be improved by the front and rear double wishbone suspension systems. Sounds very much like the system you’ll find in the Toyota Hilux BEV… but we’ll reserve judgement until we’ve driven one!

How efficient is the BYD Shark?

The BYD Shark uses an electric-first driving mode, offering a pure-electric range of up to 55.9 miles. A fully-charged battery and a full tank of petrol will extend the total range to up to 419 miles. The press info says that an efficiency rating of 80.7 mpg is very achievable… we can’t wait to prove it in-person. If the electric range dries up and the petrol engine takes over as a power generator, it is reported to return around 29.4mpg. Which is actually not that bad!

How big is the BYD Shark and are there any other equipment highlights?

The BYD Shark is 5.5 metres long with a 3.2-metre wheelbase and short overhangs at each end, which should make off-road driving less heart-thumping. The truck features shark-inspired styling (naturally) with a large front grille, full-width rear lightbar, and 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels. You’ll be able to choose from five paint colours.

Aside from the bits we’ve mentioned in the other sections of this article, the Shark comes as standard with seven airbags, a 360-degree camera, Adaptive Cruise Control, Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert with braking, Forward and Rear Collision Warning, and Emergency Lane Keeping Assist, and more.

How much does the BYD Shark cost?

The BYD Shark will be available for a starting price of £47,290 (inc VAT) and available in one high-spec trim level.

When is the BYD Shark available in the UK?

The BYD Shark is currently available to order, with the first customer deliveries across Europe scheduled to begin in late 2026.
