Best electric cars 2022

Ready to make the switch? Here are the best electric cars for 2022, all in one place.

Will 2022 be the year you make the switch to electric?
2021 saw the popularity of electric cars boom – with searches for electric cars on Auto Trader up significantly year-on-year. The October fuel crisis was no doubt a big factor in that, but EVs have been making a steady and inevitable climb for a long time. There are plenty of reasons to start looking at electric cars in 2022: tax benefits, free access to clean air zones, less required maintenance and a more sustainable approach to driving. With petrol prices up, charging your vehicle from home is easier and cheaper than a trip to the petrol station. If you’re looking for a new electric car, here are Erin Baker’s top picks for 2022:

Mazda MX-30

We have a soft spot for Mazda’s electric compact SUV, and can’t believe it’s already on a refresh. It looks sleek, contemporary, has funky rear doors and uses sustainably-sourced materials such as cork inside. Range, however, has been a slight issue, at a maximum 124 miles. Mazda is adding a rotary engine to act as a generator, which means the range will be extended without increasing battery size, so the overall carbon footprint of the car’s manufacture won’t increase by much. They’re clever than they look, are Mazda folk.

Polestar 3

We’re already salivating at the thought of Polestar’s first SUV. You can bet it will be sleek and cool, in a pure, Scandinavian, minimalist, responsible, alternative, tech-geek, wellness-focused, sexy way. Probably with yellow seatbelts. Yum. Expect cars in the UK towards the end of 2022, with a hefty price tag but a good range and lovely performance.

MG ZS EV

This popular mid-size SUV is excellent value for money, offering up to 273 miles on one charge. It has been refreshed with a new digital display for the driver, revised styling and a new infotainment system that includes smartphone mirroring. An even cheaper version is on the way but really, all versions remain a good buy.

Nissan Ariya

We like the futuristic look of Nissan’s new Ariya, and the model has a strong pedigree, coming from the same family stable as the Leaf, which has been with us over a decade now. Nissan promises a version to suit every possible taste, including two-wheel and all-wheel drive, and power outputs from 217 to 306 metaphorical horsepower. Bold styling and lots of space get our noses twitching.

Volvo XC90 Recharge

At the heart of the first pure electric seven-seat SUV from Volvo will be its new autonomous-driving feature. Essentially a very advanced cruise-control system, the “highway pilot” as Volvo has described it, will no doubt mirror Tesla’s Autopilot function, in just requiring the light touch of a driver’s hand on the wheel, but the car will steer, accelerate and brake. Expect the already hefty price tag to increase.

BMW iX

BMW’s flag-waving, standard-bearing, good ship iX was launched last year but sets sail in earnest across the seas of electric luxury in 2022 and is everything you’d expect: gorgeous, plush, spacious, relaxing, fast and big. It has a range of about 300 miles and is a technological tour de force.

Tesla Model Y

We think the Model Y is Tesla’s most accomplished car yet: panel gaps have been largely sorted, it suits its size better than the Model 3 and feels the sharpest to pilot round town. The tailgate opens upwards to create a huge gap for loading stuff, you’ve got all-wheel drive and the range is about 300 miles. The Model Y was launched last autumn but, given customer order times, this feels more like a car for 2022.

Audi Q4 e-tron

This car will be Audi’s bestseller by a country mile, mostly because it’s also the brand’s most affordable electric car to date. But with a range of just over 300 miles, a large boot and Audi’s funky “virtual cockpit” driver display, it provides surprising value for money from such an established premium German brand.
