Skoda has unveiled the fourth-generation Superb. Like the previous versions, it continues to major on space, technology and ingenious features to make life that little bit easier. The latest Superb will be even bigger and safer than before with stylish looks inside and out. There will be no fully electric version, but there is a variety of petrol, diesel and hybrid options that will all have an automatic gearbox.
  • • Skoda’s flagship will continue to be available as a hatchback or estate, with a choice of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid power
  • • The new Superb will have even more space inside than before
  • • The petrol plug-in hybrid option, offered only for the estate, has a claimed electric-only range of 62 miles
  • • Available to order from January, with deliveries expected summer 2024
  • • Prices are yet to be confirmed but should be from £35,000

Design and models available

Like the previous generation, the new Superb will be available as either a hatchback or an estate. Both options have more space inside thanks to a small increase in overall height and length. The design of the new Superb is sleeker than its predecessor and Skoda has made various tweaks to improve the aerodynamics, which improves fuel efficiency.

Interior and tech

Skoda’s new range structure has three trim levels, starting with the Essence trim, progressing to Selection and finally the range-topping Laurin & Klement. Within these there are various options for different interior fabrics and materials, from grey cloth to a combination of cognac leather and leatherette.
The big interior news is a set of 'Smart Dials' with configurable functions to control things like climate control and stereo volume. There's a head-up display option now too, in addition to the 10-inch virtual cockpit that's standard in the neatly redesigned interior. The central infotainment screen is 10 inches as standard too, but can be increased to 13 inches as an option. Skoda has included up to 28 ‘simply clever’ features including storage compartments, an integrated waste bin, an electronic load cover for the estate model, and an integrated funnel for refilling the windscreen washer fluid. In addition, there is more passenger space than before, as if that were needed - the last Superb was massive - and the estate model now has a boot capacity of 690 litres. Again, that's a small increase on what was already an enormous luggage space. The Superb can now receive ‘over the air’ updates thanks to a permanent internet connection, and new technology improves safety. It has various driver assistance features that will alert the driver and intervene if the car senses a risk of collision, both while driving and when the car is stationary. When getting out of the car it will give an exit warning in the wing mirrors if it senses the door is about to be opened onto traffic approaching from behind. The Superb's self-parking features have also been improved, says the company.

Engines

Although there will not be a fully electric Superb, there will be a petrol plug-in hybrid option for the estate that offers up to 62 miles of electric range. Both body types also have petrol and diesel variants available with either two- or four-wheel drive. The entry-level petrol engine is to be offered with mild-hybrid technology, which can make use of energy recovered when braking.

Price and release

The price list for the new Superb has yet to be announced, but we expect it to start from around £35,000. Orders can be placed from the beginning of 2024 with first deliveries expected in the summer.

What other cars from Skoda are due this year?

Skoda has also recently announced updates to its largest SUV the Kodiaq and the all-electric Enyaq

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

With many manufacturers like Volvo and Mazda discontinuing their estate models in the UK, you may think Skoda will have an easy ride. However, the Superb will compete with the closely related Volkswagen Passat and Audi A6. It will also have rivals such as the Peugeot 508 and Vauxhall Astra to contend with, both of which are available as a hatchback or an estate.
