There are a couple of unusual things about the new Polestar 4, officially on sale today priced from a tenner less than £60,000. Firstly, it doesn’t have a rear window. We’ll come back to that. And secondly, it’s “positioned between the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 in terms of size and price.” Hmm? ‘Polestar 2.5’ doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, we suppose. Read on to find out much more about Polestar’s unusual new glass-shy electric SUV-type-thing.
• The Polestar 4 is the fourth production car from Volvo electric offshoot Polestar • Electric coupe-SUV is priced from £59,990; Dual motor version costs £66,990 • Battery range up to 379 miles from the single motor version; 200kW max charge speed • Single motor version hits 60mph in 6.9 seconds, dual motor version does it in 3.7 seconds • The rear screen is replaced by a rear-view camera system … which can be switched off • You can order one now

Design and models available

Polestar says that binning a rear screen allows for more rear space in a car that’s only 6.5cm taller than a Polestar 2 – surprisingly low for an SUV. In pictures, at least, it does appear the most ‘coupe-like’ of any SUV this side of an … anything, really. Much of that is down to a shape honed for aerodynamic efficiency. Aside from the low roofline, the smooth(ish) bonnet points aggressively downwards, the door handles retract, and even the side windows are deigned to be as flush with the body as possible.
Two versions of the 4 are coming to the UK, both called ‘long range’ but one with a single motor and the other with two. As is the norm for Polestar, there are no trim levels as such, but buyers can specify various packs including Pilot, Plus, Pro, and Performance. All the Ps. They add various tech, comfort and performance upgrades, including bigger wheels, Nappa leather upholstery (of the most sustainable sort) and seat ventilation. Among much more.

Interior and tech

The lack of rear screen means the panoramic glass roof can stretch further back, making the cabin airier, ironically enough. Rear space in particular is noticeably better than in the Polestar 2. Up front there’s been significant improvement too, with the driver staring at a 10.2-inch high-def instrument display, and infotainment handled by a vast, Google-powered 15.4-inch central screen. There’s even a third screen between the front seats so that rear passengers can control the infotainment. Imagine that – more ways for the kids to take over the stereo and jump from Tik-Tok song to Tik-Tok song every 15 seconds. Great.
The amount of standard safety kit is vaster than the pixel count, though, with a dozen cameras and infrared sensors handling everything from autonomous driving to 3D mapping and active crash mitigation.

Engines

The long-range single motor version has 268 horsepower, with the motor driving the rear wheels. It good for a 379-mile claimed range from a 100kWh battery. The four-wheel drive dual motor, also called ‘long-range’, offers slightly lesser battery range (360 claimed) but it’s much quicker, hitting 60mph in 3.7 seconds thanks to 536 horsepower. A Performance Pack can be added to the dual motor version, which doesn’t up the power but does include significant chassis adjustments for a more involving driving experience.
Maximum charging speed is 200kW. At a public rapid charging station you should be able to get 10-80 per cent dispatched in around half an hour.

Price and release

The Polestar 4 is available to order now, with first deliveries starting around March. A base car costs from £59,990, and a dual motor version £66,990. Despite the lack of named trim options, it’s fairly easy to add cost to your 4. The only free paint option is Magnesium (grey), with the other five paintjobs costing £1,000-1,400. The Nappa leather upgrade is around £4,000 (albeit you do get heated and ventilated seats too), and the Pilot Pack, which adds lane change assist and advanced cruise control) is another £1,300. Bigger wheels (21-inch) and gold seatbelt trim will set you back £1,800, and if you’ve got a dual motor car, the Performance Pack is a £4,000 option. For that you are getting an enhance driving experience though, including electrically adjustable suspension and better brakes and tyres.

What other cars from Polestar are due this year?

Polestar’s next car will be the 5, a high-end four-door coupe due in 2025 and aimed at the likes of the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S. It’ll be the quickest and most luxurious Polestar ever, with a price likely to creep into six figures.

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

Polestar actually expects the 4 to be its biggest selling car, owing to its practicality and fairly reasonable price. The new Porsche Macan, which is due to arrive imminently as an electric-only SUV, is arguably its main rival, although the Tesla Model Y, BMW iX3, Mercedes EQC and Genesis GV60 operate in the same circa-£60k electric SUV ballpark too.
