The BMW X5 has had a major overhaul gaining new looks, new engines and new tech. Enter the most extra X5 yet with its Neue Klasse design, bold ‘double-X’ lights, snazzy Panoramic iDrive display, powered self-opening doors and a choice of five engine types, including hydrogen. This is also the first X5 to be offered as an EV with the iX5 promising up to 525 miles of range from a single charge.
The X5 was the BMW’s first SUV back in 1999 and while the general idea of a large, do-it-all vehicle remains unchanged, this latest model will be undeniably more luxurious and advanced than any X5 we’ve seen before.
- The X5 sits between the X3 and the X7 in BMW’s SUV line-up, with models like the X6 offering a coupe-like twist on the traditional SUV formula
- The new X5 will feature BMW’s new design cues, ‘double-X’ LED lights, a new interior in the style of the iX3, automatic doors and optional slate trim details
- The all-electric iX5 will have a range of up to 525 miles
- The flagship X5 M60e xDrive model will have 612 horsepower
- Due to arrive in the spring of 2027
- Expected to start between £75,000 to £80,000

Design and models available
The new X5 looks very much like a scaled up iX3. It features BMW’s new signature kidney grille with added distinguishing touches like the ‘double-X’ daylight running lights and the ‘Winglet’ door handles which protrude from near the base of the window just like you’ll find on the Volvo EX60. BMW has taken this one step further, though, by making the doors electrically powered so they can be opened automatically.
This new model will be manufactured in the USA and BMW says it has focused on cutting associated carbon dioxide emissions. For example, the steel used for the car’s body is made using renewable energy and includes a high proportion of recovered scrap metal.

Interior and tech
Inside, we expect the X5 to be just as plush as it looks in the pictures, with a large panoramic roof and a plethora of upholstery and trim options. BMW will even offer slate surfaces in places to compliment more conventional materials like leather and glass. The X5 now gains BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system and for the first time there’s the option of a passenger display in addition to the central infotainment screen.
All the infotainment and driving systems in the iX5 models will be powered by BMW’s Heart of Joy ‘superbrain’ which is also used by the iX3, while the other X5 variants will use an array of alternative systems to achieve a similar effect.
Naturally the X5 will come with a vast array of driving assistance tech, including parking space detection powered by AI. Adding the option of the Parking Assistant Professional package provides a remote-control parking function using the My BMW app.

Engines, batteries and range
The X5 will be offered as a fully electric iX5 60 xDrive with 578 horsepower and up to 525 miles of range. There will be the option of two plug-in hybrids which pair a 3.0-litre petrol engine with a 26.5kWh battery. The X5 50e xDrive offers up to 63 miles of all-electric range while the performance focused X5 M60e xDrive will pack 612 horsepower.
A 3.0-litre diesel x5 40d xDrive will also be available and in the future BMW is planning its first production hydrogen model to complete the line-up.
All models will come with adaptive suspension as standard and M Performance model gets the option of air suspension and rear-axle steering, too.
