The Autotrader expert verdict:

4

Known for being lightweight to maximise payload, the X-Way features Iveco’s latest interior to bring it up to par with its flagship S-Way model. Fleets will benefit from varying off-road adaptations to suit everything from spending its life on the motorway to rarely ever seeing tarmac.

Reasons to buy:

  • tickGreat choice of engines and power outputs
  • tickNow up to the same standards as the S-Way
  • tickExcellent running costs and efficiencies

At a glance:

Engines

Both the Cursor 9 and XCursor 13 engines can be matched with the X-Way chassis. Iveco used to offer an 11-litre option as well but the range has been simplified to just two engines now. The entry-level 8.7-litre unit can be had at 340, 360 or 400hp outputs with 1400, 1650 and 1700Nm of torque respectively. The 12.9-litre engine offers higher power 460, 500, 540 and 580hp variants with corresponding 2300, 2400, 2500 and 2600Nm of torque. AT and AD cabs are available with all but the 580hp engine while the AS sleeper cab is limited to the 460, 500 and 580hp engines. Fleets looking to cut emissions can also pair the X-Way with a 500hp, 2200Nm of torque compressed natural gas (CNG) engine.

Transmission

Iveco offers the X-Way range with the ZF Traxon 2 12-speed or 16-speed automated gearbox. It can be specified with rocking mode, off-road mode, creeping mode and up to four reverse gears, all designed to improve its off-roading ability. The updated gearbox has a number of automatic features designed to improve efficiency and reduce wear. For example, if the vehicle is rolling back, the Traxon 2 system will slow the roll and engage neutral to reduce gearbox and clutch wear.

Cabs

The X-Way range includes three cab options: Active Day (AD), Active Time (AT) and Active Space (AS). While the day cab is only available with a low roof, AT is a regional sleeper that can be had with low or medium height roofs. AS is the largest sleeper cab designed for long haul work with low or high roof variants. The setup can also be tailored to the vehicle’s intended mix of on- and off-road driving. The ON specification is, as the name suggests, targeted at vehicles that will spend the vast majority of their working life on the road. ON+ increases ground clearance and adds a beefier, more robust bumper for X-Ways that will drive in a mixture of environments. OFF comes with off-road approval and maximises approach angles and protection underneath the truck for the harshest off-road conditions.
Expert rating: 4/5

Comfort and storage

Equipped with its largest sleeper cab, the X-Way is nearly identical to the S-Way. The flat floor makes it easy to move around inside the cab and an extra bunk above can be used as a storage shelf or space for a co-driver. The infotainment touchscreen is easily accessible and a row of physical buttons control body and other vehicle functions. Climate control is operated with two dials and large numbers are displayed on the screen, so a quick glance is all it needs to see what the set temperature is. There are drawers, shelves and cupholders aplenty in the dash and overhead lockers provide more sizable stowage capacity for personal belongings on longer journeys.
Expert rating: 4/5

Safety

Iveco gives operators the option of traditional mirrors or mirror cameras to suit driver preference and the type of work the vehicle will typically do. In the tipper version we tried with the AS cab, the side mirror cameras don’t offer a view into the load bed which can be an added benefit of these systems as we found in the Renault Trucks C. With mirror cameras fitted, blind spot information is delivered through these screens in an intuitive way which will be familiar for drivers who have spent time in the S-Way. To accommodate moving bodywork, a reversing camera is mounted low down at the rear to help minimise blind spots when the vehicle is manoeuvering.

Handling

In the AS sleeper cab we tried, the cab felt well insulated from the road and the load area. It felt incredibly settled on the road with its rear air suspension setup balancing comfort and stability. We’d need to try the AD day cab version to compare how it feels with less separation between the driver’s seat and the body to give a full summary of its handling capabilities. Like the S-Way, cruise control is operated on the steering wheel and safety systems function in the same way. The digital driver’s display is clear and the simple layout is straightforward to understand. Iveco’s mirror cameras give the driver a good level of depth perception which makes reversing much easier. The X-Way is also fitted with Iveco’s engine brake which is extremely powerful and responsive, helping the driver to minimise brake wear.
Expert rating: 3/5

Running costs

One of the X-Way’s key strengths is its lightweight construction which allows fleets to maximise payload capacity. In an 8x4 32-tonne GVW configuration, the X-Way has one of the best payload capacities in this segment. X-Way models are also included in Iveco’s DriveAway range which features Thompsons-bodied tippers which are stocked for immediate delivery. This allows fleets to swiftly deploy new tippers to meet contract demands. ON+ and OFF versions will likely be the best value by reducing the chance of damage associated with challenging off-road sites.
Expert rating: 5/5

Warranties and dealer networks

X-Way tippers supplied through the DriveAway programme come with a two-year, 50,000km warranty and a repair and maintenance package for the chassis. Thompsons bodywork is covered by a two-year unlimited mileage warranty. Iveco has a strong dealer network across the UK which is supported by franchise partners such as Guest, Acorn Truck Sales and North East Truck & Van.
Expert rating: 3/5

Why buy?

With one of the largest payload capacities in this segment, the X-Way stands out as a truck that will boost fleet efficiency and, ultimately, earn more per run for operations that work on a tonnage basis. The interior benefits from Iveco’s updated cabs which offer a good level of comfort and modern technology to make a usable and welcoming space for drivers. Those familiar with the S-Way will find it easy to transition over to an X-Way and a variety of cab, chassis and various levels of off-road suitability mean it can be tailored to the job.
