This retro looking thing is the brand-new Morgan Supersport, officially unveiled today with a price tag of… wait for it… £105,000. You can get it waaaaaaay past that with a few options, too. But hey, it’s a thing dedicated SOLELY to the art of driving, it’s British, it’s basically handmade (one of its options is a £650 “photographic build record”), and it’s a new car that isn’t an EV. So we’re all for it.
Read on to find out all about the Morgan Supersport…
 • • It has four wheels, which isn't guaranteed with a Morgan
 • • It replaces the Plus Six, a car with its roots in the 1960s
 • • Aluminium chassis means it’s light – just over a tonne weight
 • • BMW 3.0-litre turbo engine gives the Supersport 335 horsepower
 • • Eight-speed automatic gearbox (not that old school, then ) and rear-wheel drive
 • • 0-62mph takes just 4.1 seconds; top speed 169mph
 • • Interchangeable roof panel can be a hard top or soft top
 • • On sale now from £105,000 before options. And there are many

Design and models available

From the company that brings you the three-wheeler, the Morgan Supersport is designed to be the perfect combo of retro charm and modern, exciting dynamics. Like an Emmerdale storyline. The basic formula is familiar: long bonnet, cab back, wheel arches a flowing feature. But it’s a clean, modern take befitting the cutting-edge aluminium chassis underneath. Part of the reason for the design is aerodynamic efficiency, with the Supersport five per cent more slippery than before, and a 20 percent reduction in lift, which improves stability. With the hardtop, it’s 20 per cent stiffer than the old Plus Six, too. (Buyers get to choose whether they want the hardtop or a retractable mohair soft roof.)
Morgan aims to make a few hundred of these per year in its factory south of Worcester, with each buyer able to choose from an enormous options list. Some of it is stuff you’d expect – extensive paint options, decals, and various fabrics for the roof – but there are a few surprises. A Sennheiser stereo, for instance, parts of which are built into the chassis. Heck, there’s even a wireless phone charging pad. The absolute luxury of it.

Interior and technology

This is a “flagship” car for Morgan, whose aim is to be as visceral to drive as every other Morgan but with a massive improvement in refinement and day-to-day usability. It actually has a boot, for one thing… well, it’s more a rear-mounted glovebox. But still. As part of the modernisation process of what is still, at its core, a dynamic driving experience, the cabin is more accommodating to taller people than any past Morgan. The dashboard has buttons only for essential functions – no screens here – and very basic, easy-to-read dials.

Engine and performance

The engine is a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine, the same one you’ll find in various BMWs and the Toyota Supra.
It drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox, whose origins are given away by a gear selector you may have pulled in a BMW of yore. It’s a (BMW-mandated) reminder of where the power originally comes from. As standard the wheels are 18 inches and weigh just 10.8kg, albeit you can specify a set of 19s that are a kilogram lighter still. For reference, a 19-inch BMW M Sport wheel can weigh 15kg. The result off all this is a 0-62mph time of 4.1 seconds. The suspension and steering have been tuned specifically to make the Supersport reasonably comfy day-to-day, while also having more feel than Curtis Stigers’ saxophonist. That’s because, for the first time ever, Morgan is pitching a car as a genuine alternative to a Porsche 911. As opposed to a car that you have ALONGSIDE your Porsche, for when you really fancy a brutally raw journey from point A to point B.

Price and release

It’s £105,000 before you’ve done things like paint the dashboard or colour the fabric roof. The Sennheiser stereo is £3,600. It’s £595 for a number sticker on the doors (“I put a big number two on the side of my Morgan. LOL.") It’s £3,000 for an upgraded exhaust. It’s also £3,000 for a “handling pack” that sharpens the steering and allows asjustment of the dampers. It’s £2,340 for a limited-slip differential, which will assist you in getting your Morgan SIDEWAYS!!!!111!!111. You get the idea. You can spend.
As for when you can have one. Probably quite quickly if you order it now.
