The military vehicle that became a mainstream institution thanks to the endorsement of a certain musclebound moviestar, the Hummer has come a long way from its early days as an all-terrain troop carrier and successor to the legendary army Jeep. Now just as likely to be found in stretch limo, hen night transport form as it is prowling the world’s war zones, the Hummer has always represented a certain brand of macho American excess, grounded in Tonka-toy looks and legendary off-road performance.
Even the Hummer has had to embrace electrification, though, though it’s done it with typical excess-all-areas style. As Alex Legouix has been finding out with an exclusive look at the first Hummer EV on UK soil. While not officially available here specialist importers have been able to secure a few Hummer EVs for sale on this side of the Atlantic, despite it already being a sell-out success back in its homeland. Albeit at a price.

How much does the Hummer EV cost?

As Alex discovers, there are a lot of impressive numbers attached to the Hummer EV. Perhaps the most awe-inspiring, though, is the price. Due to huge demand back in America it’s already an expensive choice but by the time it lands in the UK you’ll need to find well over £300,000 to get one outside your house.
Before committing to that you’d best make sure there’s space on your driveway as well, because the Hummer EV is one beast of an electric car. More than five metres long and well over two metres wide the Hummer makes the new Range Rover look like a hatchback in comparison, a kerbweight of over four tonnes meanwhile making it twice as heavy as a VW ID.4.

How fast is the Hummer EV?

It might be built like a tank but the Hummer EV has got the power to move like a sports car, thanks to a triple-motor drive system with over 1,000 horsepower and nearly 16,000Nm of torque. As such it will hit 0-60mph in around three seconds and, thanks to its huge battery, can travel over 300 miles between charges.
A huge selection of driver modes and clever technology mean the Hummer EV is as unstoppable off the road as on it, the huge off-road tyres combined with suspension that can lift the car out of trouble while the four-wheel steering that makes it vaguely driveable in normal traffic can also operate in what’s called a ‘CrabWalk’ setting. This steers all four wheels in the same direction, meaning the Hummer EV can literally drive sideways out of a tight spot.

Does the Hummer EV make any sense?

While it may be huge and very expensive the Hummer EV comes packed with nifty features, as Alex enjoys exploring in the video. These include removable roof panels you can stash in the huge front luggage compartment, 18 camera views to show what’s going on around and even under the vehicle and the ability to operate as a mobile power bank to power your campsite in the wilds or even charge another electric vehicle.
