Video | Which Toyota is the GReatest?

Rory travels to South Africa to taste forbidden fruits in the shape of the Toyota GR Corolla, and compare it to its GR brothers

Toyota Gazoo Racing might have a comedy name but it’s deadly serious in its ambitions to put bring some glitz and glamour to a brand more associated with reliability and hybrid powered efficiency than speed. As such the GR brand operates on the track and on the street, competing (and winning) at the highest levels of motorsport in endurance racing and rallying as well as thrilling building road cars anyone can enjoy.
Anyone? Not quite! As Rory explains in this video, its apparent ‘rule of three’ means only three GR cars can be sold in any one territory, the UK having had the GR Yaris, GR Supra and GR86. But not the GR version of the Corolla hatchback you see here, much to the anguish of hot hatch fans denied another stellar GR offshoot.
For a chance to have a go with this unicorn Toyota Rory has travelled all the way to South Africa, where for one reason or another the ‘rule of three’ doesn’t seem to apply, and the GR Corolla is available alongside the rest of the range. And, usefully, Toyota has its own GR customer centre with a private entrance directly onto the adjacent Zwartkops raceway. Creating the perfect opportunity to see how the Corolla compares with the rest of the line-up, both by the numbers and, inevitably, in a bit of a race.
