A small French sports car costing more than a Lamborghini? Yes, you heard that right. And it doesn’t make any more sense when you learn more about the car in question.
It’s the Alpine A110 R Ultime. Which, just like any other Alpine A110, has a 1.8-litre engine. And just 345 horsepower. Which is about a third of the firepower you’d get in the Lamborghini Temerario you could have for less money. How does that work? To try and find out Rory takes a trip to a circuit where Alpine has enjoyed some of its greatest successes – Le Mans. Over the decades the firm has raced to glory in a variety of delicate-looking lightweight prototypes, scoring class victories for efficiency and innovation along the way as well as an overall win in 1978. That less-is-more tradition reaches its climax in this Ultime version of the A110 R, a car soon to be reborn in fully-electric form alongside its battery-powered A290 hot hatchand A390 crossover brothers. Alpine clearly wanted to give the combustion-engined A110 a proper send-off, mind. Which is what Rory is driving here. Does it compute, though? Strap in alongside Rory to find out!
