Electric cars have more than proven themselves a viable alternative to petrol or diesel powered ones, the smoothness, instant power and – for those with capacity to charge at home – convenience more than enough to win increasing numbers of drivers over.
But what about folk who view cars as more than just transport, the petrolheads for whom the sounds, smells and other sensory delights delivered by a high-performance combustion engine are a vital part of the experience? Is there an electric car out there able to win THEM over as well? The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is possibly one of the first that could. Rory has already given it the honour of his personal top prize in the Auto Trader New Car Awards 2024, and everyone on the team here who’s driven it has been similarly blown away. Building on the already impressive foundations of the regular Ioniq 5 the N version doesn’t stop with added horsepower and handling. It also knows how to have fun. That’s because the team behind it are all petrolheads themselves, schooled on creating some of the best combustion powered performance cars of the last few years. And this shared passion means they know exactly how to put a smile on the face of the most committed car enthusiast, be that through sound, simulated gear changes or lairy driving modes. The Ioniq 5 N doesn’t need any of this to be a fun car. So, the fact they went to the bother anyway only makes it more satisfying. All well and good. But can it REALLY beat the best of the petrolhead bunch in terms of pure performance and emotion? Rory and helpers take to the track to find out, with a series of challenges against iconic performance car rivals like the Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0 and Honda Civic Type R. And others. Quite the test!
