Descriptions of XPeng as the ‘Chinese Tesla’ are an obvious temptation given it’s owned by a tech billionaire with a love of flying cars and robots and its first product here – the G6 – looks more than a little like a posh Model Y. You’ll be hearing a lot more about XPeng in the not too distant future and the G6 has already impressed us, this new X9 bringing business class travel to the school run in a spaceship inspired electric people carrier. Yes, really.

• Where the G6 is a more conventional electric crossover the X9 is a curious mix of people carrier and luxury limo, with seating for seven

• While the van-like shape might not look all that glam the interior of the X9 offers private jet levels of luxury, with an unusual 2+2+3 seating arrangement with ‘zero gravity’ recliners in the middle row

• Standard, long-range and all-wheel drive versions coming to the UK, the latter with over 500 horsepower and range of 360 miles

• XPeng says the X9 will be here later this year

• Luxury and tech doesn’t come cheap, the standard range version starting at a bottom-line price just shy of £75,000

Design and models available

In a world where luxury car buyers have migrated from traditional saloons into SUVs the X9 stands out as something a bit unusual, given in silhouette you might just mistake it for a van. On closer scrutiny it’s more interesting than that, XPeng’s ‘Futuristic Starship Design’ putting shape to the box-like proportions, sculpted sides and futuristic lighting elements adding to the interest. It’s still built with interior space first and looks second, and this side of the similarly quirky Lexus LM or posher versions of the VW ID.Buzz there’s little like it. Credit to XPeng for this fresh twist on luxury norms, though. And there are benefits…

Interior and tech

Once inside the X9’s boxy shape makes more sense, the huge interior space divided into an unusual seating arrangement of two seats up front, two recliners in the middle and a folding bench for up to three people in the third row. We’ve seen variations on this format in the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 but neither can match the X9’s three-seat third-row bench. Tech-wise the XPeng goes big – literally – on screens, with a massive 17.3-inch central display and option of a fold-down 21.4-inch one for chilling with the family when charging and basically turning your car into a lounge on wheels.

Batteries/range

There will be three options when the X9 arrives in the UK, comprising single-motor standard and Long Range models with 320 horsepower and best-case range of 382 miles for the latter. A more powerful twin-motor option will also be available, slashing the 0-62mph time to a fraction under six seconds without a massive impact on the range.

Price and release

The X9 might be a family-friendly MPV but it’s priced to compete with luxury SUVs, with even standard model starting at £74,990. Which is punchy, given the more fashionable SUV-shaped alternatives from Kia, Hyundai and Volvo those looking for a premium electric seven-seater will also be considering.

What other cars from XPeng are due this year?

As we write we can only say ‘watch this space’ but if XPeng is a new name to you it’ll soon be getting a lot more familiar.

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

We’ve already mentioned the likes of the Kia EV9, the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and the Volvo EX90 and there are more luxurious electric seven-seaters on the way, including the new Skoda Peaq. Interesting times!
