The Polestar 4 gains a rear window, a larger boot and more rear headroom – enter the Polestar 4 SUV!

The sleek, futuristic, all-electric Polestar 4 caused quite a stir when it first arrived on the scene with no rear window. But now there’s a new Polestar 4 in town, and this one swaps opaque bodywork for a redesigned tailgate featuring a traditional pane of glass. Billed as the Polestar 4 SUV, this is new model takes the all the tech and Scandi Chic design of the original 4 and straightens out the roofline to create an estate-like SUV with a larger boot. The Polestar 4 SUV will be drastically more practical than its swoopier sibling which should help it appeal to a wider range of buyers.

Design and models available

The Polestar 4 SUV is the same length as the previous coupe-like version, but the rear of the car has been redesigned with a straighter roofline and a more upright tailgate. This creates a larger boot and gives rear passengers more headroom making what was already a generous space even roomier. Polestar says the transformation only required 48 new parts and the rest of the Polestar 4’s design remains unchanged appart from the addition of some roof rails.

As usual Polestar has paid particular attention to the Polestar 4 SUV’s environmental impact, and it has worked to reduce the car’s carbon footprint by using 100 per cent renewable energy in battery cell production. Additionally, 34 per cent of the electricity used in aluminium extraction comes from renewable sources and 23 per cent of the total aluminium used is recycled.

Interior and tech

Inside, the Polestar 4 SUV has all the familiar Polestar hallmarks. It’s stylish, minimalist and Scandinavian to a tee. There’s a massive panoramic roof, solar system inspired ambient lighting, a Harman Kardon Premium sound system and a choice of eco-conscious upholsteries made from either recycled plastics or Bridge of Weir Nappa leather. Polestar’s Google-based infotainment now has the latest Gemini AI assistance baked-in and Polestar says it has made the interface more user-friendly be increasing the number of widget shortcuts on the main display.

Unlike the coupe version, the Polestar 4 SUV will come with a regular rear-view mirror as standard, though a digital rear-view mirror can be added as a paid option. All cars come with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability allowing you to charge other devices from your car’s battery. This might come in particularly handy if you plan on taking your car camping and additionally Polestar has added a new Camping mode which allows you to control the temperature, ambient lighting, entertainment settings and other functions from either the main screen in the front or the rear display in the back of the car.

Just like other cars in the Polestar range, entry-level Rear motor models get a plainer interior while Dual motor cars get gold stripes on the seatbelts. Adding the Performance pack takes things a step further with Swedish gold seatbelts and brake calipers. Other upgrades include high-performance Brembo brakes and active dampers in the suspension.

Batteries/range

Just like the coupe equivalent the Polestar 4 SUV comes with the choice of either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. The entry-level Rear motor model has 272 horsepower and an official range of up to 391 miles, while the Dual motor all-wheel drive version is considerably more powerful with 544 horsepower enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds – this does reduce the maximum range to 373 miles, though. Both models have a 100kWh battery which can accept DC rapid charging up to 200kW allowing you to top-up from 10 to 80 per cent in around half an hour.

Price and release

Production has already started in South Korea, and the first Polestar 4 SUVs are set to arrive by the end of the year. The Rear motor model starts at £54,750 while the Dual motor costs £60,750 and the Performance pack is available from £68,250.

We are expecting a successor to the Polestar 2 to arrive early next year. Other future models include the Polestar 7 which will be a compact SUV and the Polestar 6 roadster.

What other upcoming cars will this compete with?

If you are after the Scandi vibe you might also consider Volvo’s new EX60, meanwhile the BMW iX3 is another obvious alternative. Polestar may not officially be calling the Polestar 4 SUV an estate, but it has more than a whiff of a wagon about it and buyers may also consider the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo or BMW i5 Touring. Then there’s the Toyota bZ4X Touring which is another recent example of a swoopy electric SUV reimagined as an estate car. Granted this isn’t as premium or as performance-focused, but its chunky, rugged design will appeal to those who live an outdoorsy lifestyle.
