Is the Polestar Polestar 5 Hatchback a good car?

Words by: Erin Baker

"Polestar, once the performance sub-brand of Volvo, has transformed itself into the intellectuals’ intellectual electric-car company. Its idea of downtime is reading back copies of The Architectural Review, and its fantasy night out is a lock-in at the library with the periodic table in hard copy. What Polestar doesn’t know about CO2-equivalent savings isn’t worth knowing. And thus, reader, I love it. The problem comes when trying to sell its luxury coupes and SUVs to the general public who are still all “ooo, I’ve got bigger screens and more shades of the rainbow for my interior lighting than you”. If that’s your bag, go buy a Mercedes (or Porsche Taycan or Audi e-tron GT, which are the natural competitors to this car). If however, the more subtle things get, the classier you feel, step this way. Think Loro Piana. Engage cashmere brain. Welcome to the Polestar 5: the stealthiest high-performance car ever (or “supercar in a GT format, as Polestar describes it). Shhhh…"

info
4.5

Full marks at brand level: Polestar leads the way in innovative solutions to climate change for the car world. It is so ahead of the curve that it is aiming for a zero-carbon production car by 2030 by going back to the periodic table and eliminating all greenhouse gases from the supply chain and production. However, we can’t award a large car featuring such a huge battery the full beans: no one needs a car this big or powerful. That said, such is Polestar’s success in carbon reduction, the cradle-to-gate footprint of the 5 is 23.8 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions, compared with 26.1 tonnes for the much smaller Polestar 2 when it came out.

Running costs for a Polestar Polestar 5

3/5

This is a really expensive four-seat coupe: £89k for the dual-motor version with longer range and less power (relatively, that is) or over £100k for the Performance version which gives you supercar acceleration and yellow seatbelts. Either way, it’s a Porsche Taycan, Jaguar Type 01 and Audi e-tron GT rival. If, however, you have a home charger, and can therefore get 200 miles of charge for a fiver while everyone queuing at the pumps is paying almost £2 a litre, you start to feel happier. Ditto if you’re a company-car driver and can take advantage of the sub-five per cent Benefit in Kind taxation on EVs.

Reliability of a Polestar Polestar 5

3/5

It’s a Volvo under the skin, much as Polestar will protest it isn’t. Which means it’s owned by Geely ultimately, engineered in the UK and built in China, where, like it or not, they know how to build cars effectively. Early Polestars were not great, with 42 per cent of owners reporting problems, according to WhatCar?, although nearly all were fixed within a day and for free. However, the company seems to have got its stuff together and while there are reports of glitching media screens, this is a problem shared with almost every other brand. Dealer support appears to have improved significantly, and transparent battery-health data is now one swipe away on the car’s screen. The brand currently features in the bottom third of reliability surveys but we’d expect that to improve.

Safety for a Polestar Polestar 5

5/5

For all the insane power that this car produces, it feels like a measured, docile and well-mannered family car. The dual-motor version has four-wheel drive, plenty of grip and even the Performance version has predictable responses to steering and throttle input. There is great visibility and, joy of joys, you can easily select the various advanced safety systems such as blind-spot warning or lane-departure assist and turn them on or off on the screen with big orange tabs. Polestar’s proximity to Volvo means it is at the epicentre of safety testing, with the world-class crash test centre in Sweden. We don’t like the electronic rear-view mirror (compulsory because there is no rear window) however: there is no depth perception with it, you can’t see your rear passengers and the traditional wing mirrors offer a clearer view.

How comfortable is the Polestar Polestar 5

5/5

Having driven the Polestar 5, sat in the front passenger seat and lounged around in the back, while we drove through the empty roads of Northumberland, I can confidently say this is one of the most satisfying cars in which to pass the time on a long road trip. The huge, curved glass roof stretches well behind the rear passengers’ heads, flooding the cabin with daylight and expansive views of the sky. The rear seats are slightly raised, too, so you can peer at the road ahead, and they have a wide arm rest between them with a glass screen to control temperature and recline the seats. The whole console can be folded back, however, to provide a narrow fifth centre seat. All seats get heating and various massage settings. Polestar is proud of its sound deadening, which seemed to work well up to 60mph, but there was slightly too much noise on the motorway for such an expensive car.

Features of the Polestar Polestar 5

5/5

Here lies Polestar’s central issue: it is too smart and too restrained for its own good. It is ahead of its time in terms of design, materials and what it chooses to leave out of its cars, and in a decade or so I’m sure we will all have reimagined our concept of luxury to look more like Polestar’s vision, but at the moment, customers paying six figures for a car want a blingy, glitzy, shiny interior with huge glass screens covering the entire dash, multi-coloured strips of lighting and surfaces covered in huge swathes of wood or leather. This is not Polestar. Surfaces are sculpted to thin, hard lines covered in technical weaves and sustainable fabrics. Colours are muted, the touchscreen is the size of an iPad. You could be in any of Polestar’s family, which leaves you feeling slightly short-changed. There should be a nod to the fact you have bought the flagship of the range.

We do, however, love the colour palette of orange, grey, cream and black, with yellow seatbelts for the Performance version (see below). And it’s a huge tick for the superb Bowers and Wilkins surround-sound audio system, with an entire sound bar behind the rear headrests. Ditto the inclusion of Gemini, Google’s AI system.

Most of all, though, we value Polestar’s industry-leading sustainability credentials, which is incorporated into its design, with the amount of CO2e saved through the use of recyclable lightweight materials printed onto the materials themselves inside the car. The brand has even found a decent alternative to carbon fibre, B comp, which is made from flax, and features in the seat backs.

Power for a Polestar Polestar 5

5/5

Polestar isn’t kidding when it says the Polestar 5 has supercar performance from its huge battery. The Performance version is capable of insane acceleration, with 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds and all-wheel drive to manage traction: not bad for a large family car. The ride isn’t ridiculously hard, and the steering wheel is pleasing to hold. If you’re after the best range, however, the cheaper Dual Motor version will serve you better. It doesn’t feel much slower, costs about £20k less and has a maximum distance of just over 400 miles, versus 346 miles in the Performance. Just factor in the time needed to charge the battery: ultra-rapid chargers will be your friend. In another nod to transparency, Polestar makes the battery-health information easily available on the touchscreen. Did I mention how much I love this brand?
