BYD has already made a splash in the UK selling cars under its own name but it’s already expanding its offer with its new  upmarket sub-brand Denza. It’s already shown us the Z9 GT, this Z sports car showing even more intent. With its three electric motors the Denza Z promises astounding power and the sort of demented acceleration to make your head spin. But will that be enough to tempt buyers out of more traditional sports cars like the all-conquering Porsche 911?

• The Denza Z will be the flagship model, sitting above the likes of the Z9 GT estate, the D9 MPV, and the Bao 5 4x4

• Highlights include the racy looks, an open-top Spider version, triple motors, and the capability for ultra-rapid ‘Flash’ charging

• Three all-electric models with between 236 and 254 miles of range

• Staggering 1,605hp means 0-62mph in a symbolic fraction under two seconds

• Orders open in October, with deliveries expected in late 2026 or early 2027

• Expect 911-levels of pricing, with a six-figure entry

Design and models available

Denza and BYD’s design boss Wolfgang Egger would like people to pay attention to the sweeping shoulder-line of the Denza Z, which gives the car a racy and exotic look fitting for something so fast and high-powered. The attempt to squeeze seating for four makes it long for a sporting car of this type but other details include distinctive light signatures at the back and the option of a bright-orange paint scheme. There will be three main flavours of Denza Z comprising regular Coupe, open-top Spider variant and a track-focused alternative with a big rear wing and the potential to be fitted with semi-slick tyres.

Interior and tech

Sculpted bucket seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel festooned with buttons and some daring colour combos make the Denza Z’s interior stand out, and it looks to be pretty well-made and finished. There is vestigial seating in the back and even ISOFIX mounting points, but it’s probably best to think of the car more as a two-seater. Like many of the cars coming out of China the Denza Z has a primarily digital interface, including a screen for the instrument cluster, and then a big touch-screen display running the infotainment and the climate controls. There are some examples of physical switchgear in the Denza’s cabin, but not many.

Batteries/range

All three Denza Z models have the same triple-motor arrangement, with a bigger one up front and two smaller units powering the rear wheels for mind-boggling total of 1,605 horsepower. Even the Spider does 0-62mph in 2.3 seconds, the Racing version on its sticky tyres just about nudging under two seconds dead on its way to a 217mph maximum. On the standard rubber the top speed is a still impressive 186mph. All three Z models use a 76kWh BYD Blade 2.0 battery pack, providing 236 miles of range in the Racing, 248 miles in the Spider and 254 miles in the regular Coupe. The best news is that the Denza Z is compatible with BYD’s ‘Flash’ charging, running at up to 1.5MW of power. If you can find a charger powerful enough this can send the battery from 10-70 per cent in just five minutes, or 10-97 per cent in nine minutes. All versions of the Z have carbon-ceramic brakes, trick DiSus-M suspension and full torque vectoring from the three e-motors.

Price and release

There’s no official word yet, but expect a starting price of over £100,000 and putting the Denza Z very much in the same bracket as the Porsche 911. Not that there’s a model of that car with even half the horsepower of the Denza!

What other cars from Denza are due this year?

The Z9 GT should come first, an estate-like machine with plug-in hybrid or full EV power targeting the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo. Denza will then follow up with the Z, alongside the D9 MPV – a luxury seven-seat people carrier similar in spirit to the XPeng X9 announced just this week and then the Bao 5 off-roader. All four vehicles should be on sale in the UK before 2026 is out.

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

Rivals (ambitiously) in Denza’s crosshairs include the electric Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4-Door Coupe, the Jaguar Type 01 perhaps another potential alternative.
