AMG is a brand literally defined by noisy V8 petrol engines, this unmistakable sound signature as instantly recognisable as the three-pointed star in the middle of the grille. So, how does it translate that heritage into this all-new, and all-electric, GT 4-Door Coupé?
This is just one of many challenges faced by AMG with its first all-electric model. But, as Rory finds out, in typical fashion it’s not tip-toed around the issue. Far from it. It’s embraced it. Confronted it, even. And, though it’s powered by three electric motors, that iconic V8 sound endures. As Rory demonstrates … even though AMG specifically asked him not to.
Hopefully they won’t hold it against him when the time comes to drive it, this first glimpse a chance to take stock of design previewed by the (somewhat controversial) AMG GT XX concept and some of the neat features it inspired, including two different twists on active aero depending on which model you go for. Powering it all is racing-inspired technology, the battery developed in partnership with Mercedes-AMG’s F1 engine centre based right here in the UK. This pack sends its power to no fewer than three electric motors for a combined 1,169 horsepower on the top model for claimed 0-62mph time of just 2.1 seconds.
More on this and some surprise, delight and – yes – disappointment in how the inspiration of the AMG GT XX concept has been turned into reality you’ll be seeing very soon on the road. And, indeed, the YouTube channel!
To those ends make sure you’re subscribed if you not already to be alerted to when that video goes live, and enjoy plenty more like this in the meantime!
