Performance cars are not immune to the electric revolution. While models such as the Aston Martin Vanquish and Ferrari 12 Cilindri are a last hurrah for old school V12 engines, times have changed and we live in a world where hybrid supercars and electric hypercars are accepted as the future norm. With this in mind, Mercedes has now unveiled a new concept car showing us what AMG has in store. Enter the Concept AMG GT XX, an all-electric Formula One inspired four-door coupe which heralds a new era for AMG.
• This concept shows what we can expect from AMG in the near future • With a concave grille, glow in the dark paint, aero-blade wheels and F1 inspired tech • Able to add 250 miles of charge in five minutes • Up to 1360 horsepower • Hints at a new AMG we expect next year

Design and models available

The Concept AMG GT XX certainly looks striking with its Sunset Beam Orange paint, low bonnet line and a concave front grille like a shark – or a Maserati from certain angles. This is a new look for AMG, and it will be interesting to see how elements of the design find their way onto production models. The whole car has been optimised for maximum aerodynamic efficiency with air flowing through the front grille and out of the vents in the bonnet. As this is an all-electric car, AMG has added speakers into the front lights to emit a synthesised driving sound to amplify the car’s drama. Down the sides of the car there are luminescent paint segments which glow in the dark and when the car is charging. Another standout feature is the wheel design. The large wheels have each been fitted with five moveable blades which open to allow air to cool the brakes or close flush to improve aerodynamic efficiency and increase downforce. At the back there is a large rear diffuser, an airbrake, six bold circular rear lights and a programmable LED display which can be used to communicate messages to the car's surroundings.

Interior and tech

Inside is equally as eye-catching with orange highlights and an industrial minimalism. The steering wheel is inspired by the AMG One hypercar and the race car theme continues throughout the interior with bucket seats front and back. The upholstery is made from recycled tyres and made to look and feel like genuine leather and the front seats can be personalised with 3D-printed pads bespoke to your body shape. These can then be easily swapped out for each driver like in a race car. A large 10.25-inch instrument screen and 14-inch infotainment touchscreen cocoon the driver while the rest of the interior remains stripped back to reduce weight.

Batteries/range

AMG has us dusting off our patchy knowledge of chemistry and electromagnetism with its explanation of the Formula One inspired battery and the axial flux motor technology used by the GT XX concept. The upshot is there are two lightweight and compact motors at the back and one at the front which combine to provide up to 1360 horsepower. The front motor only kicks in under heavy acceleration when power is required at the front wheels as well as at the rear and this results in a top speed of over 220 mph. Meanwhile, the battery has specially designed cells for high performance use. This allows them to be cooled quickly so they remain at the optimum temperature to improve charging speeds, even after some spirited driving. The ability to control the battery’s temperature helps the Concept AMG GT XX to accept over 850 kW when charging. There’s no official figure on range, but AMG promises around 250 miles can be added in just five minutes.

Price and release

This AMG GT XX is just a concept, so you won’t be able to buy one, but it does show what we can expect from an upcoming AMG model in 2026.

What other cars from Mercedes-AMG are due this year?

Like all manufacturers Mercedes is having to electrify its line-up, and the performance AMG cars are no exception. While you can still buy a AMG GT the latest version comes with a plug-in hybrid option which adapts F1 technology and this electric Concept AMG GT XX concept is a taste of new models to come.

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

This may be a whole new breed of electric four-door coupe with hypercar performance for AMG, but there are a few other models already playing in this corner of the market including the Lotus Emeya and the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. The Polestar 5 is another potential rival expected to arrive this year.
