Maserati’s iconic Gran Turismo is back, with an electrified twist. Embodying the brand’s rich history and heritage it promises the option of an electric alternative to traditional GTs like the Ferrari Roma, the Bentley Continental GT Speed or BMW 8 Series.
Launching with both internal combustion and fully electric powertrains, the new Gran Turismo combines classic style with modern technology. Maserati remains loyal to its traditions here, combining the performance and Italian craftsmanship seen in the first ever road-going Maserati. From the outset you’ll have the choice of two versions of Maserati’s new turbocharged V6 with 490 horsepower or 550 horsepower in the Trofeo version. The pure electric version meanwhile offers a total output of 760 horsepower and a big battery to go the distance on those long roadtrips, helped by a special Max Range mode.
The Gran Turismo story started at the Geneva Motor Show in 1947, with the revolutionary Maserati A6 1500. Despite refining the concept over the decades since, the classic proportions have remained, with the long bonnet and elegant bodywork carried through to the 2007 car this new one replaces. And this continues in the new Gran Turismo, including the dynamic roof line highlighting the curve of the pillar and Maserati badge.
The new model manages its weight with a multi-material approach, utilising parts made from lightweight aluminium, magnesium and high-performance steels. The innovation extends to the electronics as well with what Maserati calls a Vehicle Domain Control Module (VDCM) master controller. This software aims to provide 360-degree control of all the most important car systems, for the optimum driving experience for any conditions.
The Gran Turismo also includes Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA), first seen on the MC20. This multimedia system incorporates the latest infotainment and a display combining the main functions in an integrated touch-screen interface. An all-round sound experience means the all-electric version feels and sounds just as exhilarating as the classic Maserati engine too, thanks to 14 speakers as standard and a Sonus faber 3D sound system.
From sportiness to driver-centric luxury and comfort, the Gran Turismo is promises to shake things up in the GT market, with production starting at the end of this year. The brand’s goal to fuse sports performance and long-distance comfort, with the option of battery or internal combustion power could just be the embodiment of the modern GT car.
