Perhaps unsurprisingly SUVs still dominate the new cars coming in 2023, though there are signs of hope that estates, hatchbacks and saloons may be undergoing a reinvention and comeback of sorts. In the meantime there are some tasty offerings out there, most of them electric (or, at least, electrified) but our list includes some old-school petrol-powered performers for those seeking one last hit. Enjoy our automotive tasting menu, and a happy new year to you all.

Ferrari Purosangue

Finally, Ferrari’s SUV goes on sale. Just don’t call it an SUV. It’s a four-door, four-seat, er, “car”, according to the people in Italy. The name means “pure blood”, and underneath the metal is a naturally aspirated V12 engine with 715 horsepower, which gets our blood pumping nearly as much as the £300,000-plus price tag. We drive it in Italy in February. Stand by.
When? Early 2023

BMW XM

Lots to look forward from BMW in 2023, including fresh remixes on favourites like the M3 with its new ’Touring’ estate version or the electrified i5 twist on the all-new 5 Series. Both themes overlap in spectacular style in the XM, a high-performance plug-in hybrid SUV and only the second car developed from scratch by the M division. With both a thunderous V8 petrol engine and a hybrid electric boost it could be the cake and eat it solution, while the bold styling and ultra-luxurious interior make a loud statement about BMW’s self-confidence.
When? Mid 2023

Hyundai Ioniq 6

Quirky styling and range of over 300 miles make this saloon/coupe a worthy sibling to the incredibly popular Ioniq 5. Some might be disappointed that it doesn't share the 5’s futuristic styling, but it has acres of space inside, including one of the biggest boots on the market.

Kia EV9

Massive electric SUV from one of the most reliable brands out there. Good looking with seven seats, a large touch-screen and rumoured range of more than 400 miles. Plus that Kia seven-year warranty. It will be the all-electric large family SUV to beat.
When? Late 2023

Maserati Gran Turismo

Maserati’s march to a full battery line-up under its Folgore electric sub-brand begins in earnest with a new Gran Turismo this year. If you can’t afford the fully electric MC20 supercar, perhaps this is the one for you, although it will still have a six-figure price tag.
When? Mid 2023

Jeep Avenger

Great name for Jeep's small pure electric SUV. Styling hints at a car more suited to the terrain of towns and cities than the wilderness, but, hey, it's a jungle out there, and you'll feel the part. Jeep is talking about almost 250 miles of range, front or four-wheel drive and a reasonable price tag of around £30,000.
When? Mid 2023

Polestar 3

Electric SUV from the Volvo spin-off brand that can do no wrong. The desirable tech brand of the car world with pitch-perfect image and packaging that combines a healthy dose of Scandi living with Google tech and simple, clean styling. Up to 379 miles of range and 510 horsepower.

Porsche 911 Dakar

Shown in LA in November in terrific Dakar cross-country livery with roof rack, this rallying 911 adopts a higher stance and more rugged styling. Four-wheel drive, obviously, but mainly it’s all about that image.

Honda Civic Type R

Old-school hot hatch that is revived once more for a last hurrah before battery power takes over. Sadly the crazy looks and massive wing have been tamed, but the performance is just as wild, with 329 horsepower from a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine and hardcore handling that’s good for road and track.

Volvo EX90

At last, Volvo’s pure electric XC90 lands. Seven seats, with lots of leg room, even in the third row, and a decent boot. Expect a choice of sustainable materials including wool, cleverly sourced wood and leather alternatives. Also expect a hefty price tag, but in return you get a large dose of true luxury. Up to 370 miles of range.
When? End 2023

Lotus Eletre

An electric SUV from the Norfolk sports car manufacturer. Three versions will be available, but none are slouches, as you’d expect. The R model has almost 900 horsepower, while the others have a bit less but more range.
