Having previously presented its wild, all-terrain Sterrato version of the Huracán as a concept, Lamborghini has released further teases for the car ahead of its official world premier later this month. This off-road version of the Huracán comes as Porsche has revealed more of its new 911 Dakar, both cars seemingly aimed at lifestyle users whose chosen extreme sports take them off the beaten track. Begging the question, are all-terrain supercars the next big thing?
While electrification is inevitably coming Lamborghini isn’t ready to say goodbye to its iconic V10 engine just yet and has confirmed the Sterrato will feature this celebrated motor and all-wheel drive. With what could be the final variant of the Huracán, the ‘Sterrato’, meaning “dirt road” in Italian, demonstrates the supercar’s off-roading abilities in a series of suitably wild videos titled ‘Beyond the concrete’. These present the Sterrato sliding through dirt and gravel wearing the buzzwords' brave', 'authentic', and 'unexpected' on its bodywork to hammer its message home.

For its part Porsche has also been busy with its own entry into the niche, off-road supercar sector with its Dakar, inspired by the famous desert rally of the same name in which beefed-up 911s raced back in the day. Wild looking testing photos demonstrate the Dakar’s ability on gravel, sand, and snow in what could be seen as a gauntlet thrown to Lamborghini.
The 911 Dakar includes modifications like raised suspension, under-body armour and all-terrain tyres to equip it to perform in a wide variety of environments. Porsche claims more than 10,000 kilometres has been covered in off-road testing to calibrate these features and the combination of low weight, higher ground clearance, trademark rear-mounted engine and the short wheelbase will make for the ultimate off-roading experience.

A challenge Lamborghini will no doubt be only too happy to take up, the two cars launching just weeks apart and perhaps starting a new craze for supercars to literally go further than they ever have before.
