The Smart ForTwo became an instant icon when it arrived in the late 1990s quickly becoming a familiar sight on urban streets. You’ll still see many of the early cars in cities all over Europe comically squeezed into tight spots or parked up perpendicular to the kerb. After several generations the ForTwo was discontinued a few years ago, but now Smart has confirmed its legacy will live on with an all-electric #2 which is due to arrive in late 2026.
This is obviously not the first time Smart has made an electric two-seat city car and the first electric ForTwo made its debut back way back in 2007. It was arguably ahead of its time. Today Smart is a fully electric brand and the new #2 will join the Smart’s expanding range of crossovers. This currently comprises of the compact #1 and the larger #3, with the rugged looking #5 joining the party shortly. We don’t know much about the #2 yet but according to Dirk Adelmann, CEO of Smart Europe, “The smart #2 will shape a new era of individual urban automobility, especially in classic smart cities like Rome, London or Paris”. The new #2 is not the only reinvention of a popular model to look forward to soon. Renault is set to revive the Twingo for the electric age and Volkswagen has teased an electric Up! replacement with the ID.Every1. These models will be in direct competition with the Leapmotor T03 and Dacia Spring and we hope they signal a trend for smaller and more affordable electric cars.
