Cupra got there first with the Raval but a new generation of affordable electric cars based on shared VW tech is now hitting the roads, the ID. Cross joining the related Skoda Epiq to bring even more choice to the market. Previously known as the ID. Cross Concept and based on the new electric ID. Polo, the production version of the ID. Cross combines crossover stance with a sense of off-road toughness that should work just as well around town as it does out of it. It should be very affordable, too.

• Think of the ID. Cross as the electric alternative to the existing combustion-powered T-Cross in terms of size and intended audience

• Battery and drive tech has been adapted from VW’s ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5, swapping the motor position to power the front wheels and smaller batteries to keep costs down • Three power outputs will be available, the 116 horsepower and 135 horsepower versions with a smaller battery and just shy of 200 miles.

• Need more? The 211 horsepower top model gets extra kit and a bigger battery good for 270 miles by VW’s projected numbers

• Upright, crossover stance scores fashion points and VW backs it up with claims of lifestyle themed features like a tow hook for a rack for carrying your e-bike around

• VW says the ID. Cross will start from 28,000 euros when it goes on sale in Germany this autumn so we’d be hoping for a competitive entry price of less than £30,000

Design and models available

As predicted, the previous ‘concept’ was pretty close to the reality we now see, with understated but pleasingly chunky design dressed with urban-friendly plastic cladding to the doors and wheelarches that should shrug off the inevitable scrapes and supermarket car park dings urban life brings. There are continued – and slightly cringey – references to what VW describes as ‘secret sauce’ in the design, some of it apparently ‘spicy’. Don’t shoot the messenger on that, visible manifestations including the three stripes in the C-pillar referencing the vents on the classic VW camper from back in the day. Three trim levels will be available, going from basic Trend through to Style and top-of-the-range Style with all the illuminated goodies if you like to drive around looking like Blackpool Illuminations. Just with VW badges.

Interior and tech

Switches and physical buttons are back! Yes, VW has taken previous criticism of the earlier ID models onboard, and touch-sensitive ‘haptic’ control surfaces and multi-tasked switches for basics like windows have been ditched for more traditional arrangements for those (guilty as charged) yet to be won over by screen control for everything. This will be a key point of differentiation between the ID. Cross and many of its rivals, and we’re here for it! There are still screens, of course, with a digital instrument cluster and large infotainment display in the middle. Options include big-car luxuries like massage seats and a banging Harmon Kardon stereo.

Batteries/range

VW is a master of maximising economies of scale by sharing the same platform of batteries, motors and control systems across all its brands. The so-called MEB+ foundations on which the ID Cross is built is therefore the same as that in the new electric Polo, the Cupra Raval, the Skoda Epiq and, likely, many more to come. In the ID. Cross you have the option of 116 horsepower and 135 horsepower outputs with a relatively small 37kWh battery good for just shy of 200 miles by VW’s projections. If you need more of both the top Style model gets 211 horsepower and a 52kWh battery for around 270 miles, best case.Watch this space for UK pricing but in Germany the ID. Cross will apparently start at 28,000 euros, making it a tad more expensive than the electric Polo on which it is based. Sales are due to start in Europe in the autumn – we’d speculate it’ll be early 2027 before any arrive here in the UK.

What other cars from Volkswagen are due this year?

Expect a run of new cars built on this new MEB+ platform, all with affordability in mind. Well, nearly all – we’re also due a production version of the Polo GTI concept, which will be fun!

What other cars that are upcoming will this compete with?

The Cupra Raval is already out there, the Skoda Epiq is coming soon and ditto the ID Polo. This is now a vibrant corner of the market so alongside existing alternatives like the Renault 4 expect a response from the Chinese brands now hitting the market. All of which is good news for those who have been waiting for a more affordable generation of compact electric cars.
