Let’s open this article with a BOLD statement… the new Renault Trafic E-Tech electric represents a major turning point for medium-sized electric vans in the same way that Kia’s PV5 was for small electric vans. I’ve seen it in various guises – from initial models, to trade show stand models at the Commercial Vehicle Show and IAA Transportation… and I’ve also driven the pre-production model, but can’t talk about anything to do with THAT yet.
Anyway, let me justify the article’s initial bold statement. The Trafic E-Tech combines a strong starting price – £38,000 (ex VAT) – with it being the first van in the UK to have 800-volt electrical architecture. What does the 800 volt bit mean? Simply, the van is capable of charging faster and powering external appliances or on-board powered modifications for longer. Is that good? Yeah it is. Because that 800-volt tech brings ultra-fast 240kW DC charging (which slashes 80 per cent charge times to just 20 minutes) to the market in a medium-sized electric van at a STRONG price point.
What does that mean for you? Well, Renault's new van has effectively removed one of the biggest hurdles to increased commercial electric vehicle uptake in the UK: mid-shift charging downtime. Let’s take a closer look.
