Proof, yet again, everything sounds more glamorous in Italian Testarossa is a simple descriptive term for the red-topped engines fitted to some of Ferrari’s most celebrated cars. The associations with glamour, passion and a degree of short-fused fieriness are just … convenient. And it’s a name associated with true Ferrari icons, not least the Miami Vice era 80s Testarossa with its widebody stance and signature side vents.
Yet, apart from the name, there is nothing nostalgic about this new 849 Testarossa at all, as Rory has been finding out. The looks are almost deliberately confrontational. The 1,050 horsepower delivered by the hybrid-boosted twin-turbo V8 petrol engine sounds terrifying and the technology putting it to the road intimidating in its complexity.
