Can a plug-in hybrid V6 really embody the spirit of Ferrari? When the 296 GTB arrived a few years ago it was met with initial trepidation from enthusiasts who were worried a Ferrari without a V12 or V8 engine wouldn’t really be a Ferrari at all. However, as Rory discovered, the 296 GTB was still a formidable beast. Now, Ferrari has removed the roof to create a convertible 296 GTS version and in this video Rory finds out what it’s like to be behind the wheel.
For anyone who still feels a V6 falls a few cylinders short of a proper Ferrari, Rory begins by looking back through Ferrari’s history. Here he unearths how in the 1950s a family tragedy led to the use of V6 engines in Ferrari’s race cars – arguably an idea ahead of its time. Flashforward to today and Ferrari is combining V6 engines with hybrid technology to make supercars which blend performance and thrills but can also travel for up to 16 miles on electricity alone. Does this mean the 296 GTS loses some of its edge compared to its predecessors? If Ferrari has pulled off electrification like the Lamborghini Revuelto and the McLaren Artura you’d expect it is onto a winner, but you’ll have to watch the video to find out Rory’s verdict. If you enjoyed this video give it a like and let Rory know your thoughts on the Ferrari 296 GTS in the YouTube comments. You can also subscribe for more videos like this one.
