Sustainability Initiative Award 2026 - Toyota
The car industry is making great strides in improving sustainability, Toyota’s focus on the circular economy especially impressive

A slightly different award here, for the fact our Sustainability Initiative Award is nominated on and decided by our friends at the Carbon Literacy Project, a body dedicated to educating businesses and their employees in how to reduce their environmental impact.
Their experts considered entries from across the industry, and were especially impressed by the efforts of Bentley and Volvo.
But our winner this year is Toyota, with particular reference to its ‘Circular Factory’ programme at its manufacturing plant in Derbyshire. It stands as the first Toyota Circular Factory in Europe, taking in end-of-life vehicles – Toyota or otherwise - and recovering the materials used in them for the manufacturing of new ones. One example of this is the reuse of aluminium from wheels to make the engine blocks of new cars built at the factory, this just one of many examples designed to reduce demand for raw materials. Well done, Toyota!
