Lamborghini Urus video review

Rory heads to the Welsh countryside to take another look at the Lamborghini Urus. Can it ever be considered a driver's car, and do better alternatives exist?

The Lamborghini Urus was one of the original, and some may say one of the best, super SUVs out there. It’s become Lamborghini’s best-selling car but, while outlandish designs mask astonishing performance and practicality, there’s still a question over who this is for, and whether it can ever be considered a driver's car.
Rory takes the new Lamborghini Urus over the sweeping Welsh countryside in search on of answers.

What’s changing this time?

High performance cars should be light, low and agile. The Urus is none of these – it’s bulky, it’s tall and its heavy. As such, it’s attracted its fair share of detractors.
SUVs have to be big and imposing, and they have to be spacious enough to accommodate a family and all their things. They have to be comfy, and they usually have to have off-road ability, even if many won’t use that feature. So how does Lamborghini marry the two? Well, its engineers have worked some real magic – the biggest of which is the engine. It's four-litre twin turbocharged V8 that knocks out 650 horsepower and is capable of 0-62 in 3.6 seconds (which puts it in the same territory as the Lamborghini Huracan) and a top speed of nearly 190 miles an hour. Weighing over 2,000kg, the power-to-weight ratio in the Urus is more impressive than an Audi RS6 or a Porsche 911 Carrera. That performance is quick in a straight line, coupled with fierce gear changes and angrier exhausts. It’s tamed by a staggeringly effective set of 440-millimetre carbon ceramic brake discs and uses active anti-roll stabilization that pushes down on the outside wheels every time you go around a bend to keep it completely flat. The Lamborghini Urus also uses rear wheel steering to help it feel like a much smaller, nimbler and more agile car. It’s fun, it’s ridiculous, but it’s also a Lamborghini that you can actually enjoy with your friends and your family.
