Now that new Government guidance has set out the different phases and alert levels of lockdown, businesses and individuals can plan accordingly.
You can buy a van and arrange home delivery or customer collection from retailers that are ready to offer these services.
Dealerships across the UK can now provisionally open, provided they have the right measures in place. However, the situation is constantly changing so we encourage you to always check the latest advice in your local region and assess the buying options available to you.
So with this mind, we’ve been looking at ways to help you buy or sell a van whilst keeping the amount of physical contact to a minimum.
Contact-free options for responsible van buying and selling
We’re introducing new features to all Auto Trader van adverts, each of which will help you do more of your research and van buying from home.
These features are highlighted on the ads themselves and show the ways retailers are helping keep you safe, observe social distancing, and keep van buying easy during the lockdown.
COVID-19 safety measures
Understandably, vehicle buyers are concerned about how we’ll meet the needs of social distancing at dealerships, once restrictions have been lifted.
To help overcome these anxieties, dealers can now highlight the measures they’ve taken to keep you safe and healthy throughout the buying process on their Auto Trader adverts.
Measures may include:
• Operating by appointment only (you can make an appointment on Auto Trader, just use the email, call or chat buttons on the ad). • Click and collect services, allowing you to stay safe while picking up the van yourself • Adhering to two metres social distancing on forecourts. • Complete sanitisation of vehicles. • Using staff personal protection equipment (PPE), sneeze screens and other health and safety measures. • Making PPE and hand sanitisers available to customers.
Look out for the COVID-19 safety measures icon, to see what they can do for you.
Collection and delivery services from and to a customer’s address are currently permitted within the government guidelines, for both vehicles sales and aftersales.
The home delivery icon will show you if a van retailer is currently offering this service.
If you want to learn more about the van, you can contact the retailer through the advert and find out how they’re adhering to government guidelines on social distancing, hygiene and sanitisation.
Live video viewing
The live video viewing icon on van advert will show you whether the retailer can offer you this service. Live video viewing can be arranged directly with the retailer. These virtual vehicle walk-arounds go some way to replace a forecourt visit and give you to time ask any questions, just like they would in person.
We’re introducing these feature across Auto Trader – including cars, bikes, motorhomes and caravans – to make sure you can stay confident throughout the site.
How you can stay safe
We encourage everyone to follow NHS advice and Government guidelines. These include:
• Stay at home as much as possible • Limit your contact with other people • Stay at least two metres (six feet) away from others if you do go out • Continue to wash your hands regularly.
Finding your next van
If you’re just starting to look, have a look through our van reviews and guides for recommendations - they should help you find the one that’s right for you and your needs.
If you haven’t already, check out the Auto Trader app – it’s a great way to see what’s on the market near you and shortlist your favourites by saving them.

If you are thinking of listing your van for sale, it’s important to clean and disinfect it. Whilst there are no guarantees that this will remove all risks, it does show you are taking a responsible approach. Looking after each other at this time is essential, so if you can’t disinfect your van properly, consider delaying listing it until you can.
