The Autotrader expert verdict:

London-based Volt knows its audience and its line-up of city-friendly e-bikes ranges from folders like the Lite we tested previously to this more conventional looking Urban. Competitively priced but with a sensible spec we appreciate commuter-friendly features like full mudguards and a maintenance-free belt drive, the stylish looks and excellent build quality the cherries on top.

Reasons to buy:

  • tickAutomatic three-speed gearbox
  • tickBelt drive means no chain oil on your leg
  • tickGreat price for the technology

Design

The combination of the aluminium frame and commuter-friendly trimmings does mean this bike is on the heavier side
The Volt Urban is designed to be a simple, minimalist e-bike for urban endeavours. It certainly looks the part, and the more you look at it, the more clever little details become apparent. For instance, the bike comes with full-length mudguards, integrated lights, and even the removable battery tucked neatly away in the frame. And if we want more people to choose bikes, and more specifically, e-bikes in urban spaces, we need to create things that are easy to use, and look good, too. There is also the choice between a step-through or step-over frame. This test bike came with the latter, measuring up as a 19-inch frame size. It was a tad on the big side for your 5’ 5” tester but needs must! The combination of the aluminium frame and commuter-friendly trimmings does mean this bike is on the heavier side at 19.5kg including the 360Wh battery. That being said, we didn’t have any issues with manoeuvrability in and out of the house – thanks partially to the carry-handle on the back of the saddle.

Riding position

It’s a comfortable bike to ride and thanks to the automatic gearbox you really don’t have to think about much
Given the flat bars and generally relaxed geometry, the Urban offers a nice upright riding position or, in our case, a more stretched out one if you’re a tad small for the frame size you’re riding! The Urban comes with 1.5-inch wide tyres as standard, which is roughly 38mm in new money. There is room for slightly wider tyres but these offer a nice middle-ground between durability, comfort and rolling speed. The majority of the test riding was done on tarmacked roads and quiet country lanes, and the Urban didn’t miss a beat. It doesn’t have any sort of suspension but it’s still a comfortable bike to ride and thanks to the automatic gearbox you really don’t have to think about much beyond where you’re pedalling, and oh, was that an ice cream shop? Perhaps we should stop there…

Practicality

The Urban also thinks about modern amenities such as riding with your phone
If a bike is quite literally called, ‘Urban’, there are a few things you’d expect from it. For example, mudguards, lights, a kickstand, and the ability to carry luggage via mounted racks. The Urban ticks all of these boxes and more. Instead of a traditional chain drive, it uses a Michelin carbon belt drive paired with a three-speed automatic geared rear hub and Spintech motor. This means there is basically little to no maintenance required to keep the belt drive moving, other than a drop of oil every few thousand miles. The Urban also thinks about modern amenities such as riding with your phone. Thus, Volt has installed a Quad Lock mount in a centralised position on the bars so you can attach your phone whilst riding. This is great if you need a little navigational assistance, or need to change your playlist on the move.

Performance & braking

Volt suggests a range of up to 55 miles in favourable conditions without too much elevation.”
A Spintech rear hub motor powers the Urban, delivering up to 50Nm of torque. For most urban applications this is more than adequate and nor did it struggle on our more rural test rides and the long drag uphill to a regular café stop. The motor is powered by a 360Wh battery concealed within the frame, which you can remove with a key for remote charging. Volt suggests a range of up to 55 miles in favourable conditions without too much elevation. The bike is very simple to use and understand, and the LED screen on the bars is intuitive and easy to read even in direct sunlight. The Tektro hydraulic disc brakes are also easy to operate and worked well. They also come with electronic cut-off sensors, so when a brake lever is squeezed, the internal sensor talks to the motor to instantly switch it off.

Ride & handling

The automatic three-speed gearbox works well, but from our experience sometimes moves into a harder gear before it’s comfortable
In terms of actual ride quality, the Urban is smooth and relatively comfortable for cruising about on. The handling is decent without being excitable. The automatic three-speed gearbox works well, but from our experience sometimes moves into a harder gear before it’s comfortable. Some people prefer to grind when they pedal but others are used to a higher cadence, and it appears the Urban favours the former.

Running costs

In fact, if you think about the money you’re saving compared to say a weekly bus ticket, you could buy tens of Greggs sausage rolls
The battery takes roughly three hours to charge from empty via a standard charger. This translates to around 6p per charge cycle, which is pretty cheap compared to other means of transport these days! In fact, if you think about the money you’re saving compared to say a weekly bus ticket, you could buy tens of Gregg’s sausage rolls. Now that’s a good compromise.

Reliability

The belt drive makes maintenance a thing of the past
The Urban is a contemporary e-bike and it’s designed to be used in all-weathers as a commuter or leisure bike in the city. Therefore, it should be built to withstand the typical British weather. There’s nothing to suggest that it isn’t, particularly during the testing period Autotrader had with it. The belt drive makes maintenance a thing of the past, and it means you can wear white trousers without worrying about getting a ‘Cat 4 tat’ on your leg. Which is to say, the mark of shame a traditional oily chainring leaves on your calf and ‘proper cyclists’ will snigger at. The brakes are the only real thing on the bike that might wear out quickly. But brake pads are consumable items and tend to need replacing more frequently on e-bikes due to the higher forces the extra weight and speed puts through them.

Warranty & servicing

Volt’s bikes don’t need to be serviced or sent to specialists to deal with problems
The Volt Urban is covered by a three-year warranty, including the frame, motor and battery. Volt offers a one-year warranty on chargers, lights and other mechanical parts, and a two-year warranty on the LCD display and other electrical components. You might find longer warranties with other brands, but Volt’s bikes don’t need to be serviced or sent to specialists to deal with problems. So, even if there is an issue it should be straightforward to fix by your local bike shop.

Equipment

It comes with everything you need yet nothing you don’t
For the £2,399 Volt is asking (at the time of writing) you’ll struggle to find a sleeker looking urban e-bike than this. It comes with everything you need yet nothing you don’t. No heavy suspension fork, no derailleur gears, and no massive 800Wh battery adding unnecessary weight or cost. Yes, the brakes might leave a little to be desired and the saddle was a tad uncomfortable, but these things can be changed easily and at not a great deal of extra cost.

Why buy?

The spec is well-considered, and it is difficult to look past it at this price point
For nipping around town or heading to the café, it’s a great little bike that won’t break the bank. If you’re after an e-bike that’s simple to use and doesn’t require much looking after, then the Volt Urban is certainly one to consider. The belt drive and automatic gearbox work well together, and the ride quality feels like it’s a more expensive frame. The spec is well-considered, and it is difficult to look past it at this price point.
