In case you missed it e-bike innovator Avinox recently launched its second-generation motors, the M2 and M2S. In a world where electric bike technology seems to move almost as fast as mobile phone tech, it was easy to see how important this launch was as the news essentially took over the internet for the day. Or, at least the bits of interested in e-bikes!

Every media outlet and every sponsored athlete and influencer was talking about the M2 and M2S systems. But why?

More power, more torque, more controversy?

Avinox’s motors have not been without controversy. Its original M1 system of a few years back rattled the cages of some of the biggest names in the industry. Some even questioned the need for such powerful motors for electric bicycles, and the commentary has gained such traction that there has even been talk of regulatory bodies getting involved.

Whatever you think about that the stats are impressive. The new M2 system weighs approximately 2.65kg and the M2S 2.59kg. According to Avinox, the M2S comes with a 45 per cent increase in power density over the M1, and the noise levels have also been kept to a minimum.

The peak power numbers are where things get really interesting, though. In the UK pedal-assisted electric bikes are restricted to a continuous power output of no more than 250W, but the peak power is currently unregulated. And Avinox has produced a motor with a limit of 1,500W, 150Nm of peak torque and 130Nm of continuous torque. The latter figures more than many motorcycles.

Big brands, big bikes, big power

Over 60 brands have already adopted the system, including Atherton Bikes, Whyte, Unno, Mondraker, Megamo and more. So, it’s pretty evident that the industry is going to be saturated with Avinox-powered bikes, and brands are putting their eggs in the ‘more power’ basket.

The announcement also saw the launch of new battery packs, including a rounded battery, which has allowed brands like Atherton to stay true to its design ethos and keep rounded tubes for its first e-bike.

Alongside the power and torque stats the new motor systems have plenty of other cool features, like Apple Find My integration, navigation and connectivity to the Avinox Ride App to open up user-configurable settings.

Among the power numbers and the torque stats there are plenty of other cool features the M2 and M2S systems now come with, like the Apple Find My ecosystem integration, ride navigation, and the Avinox Ride App which offers plenty of customisation when paired with the bike.

But why does it matter?

Because Avinox-powered e-bikes are here to stay. The industry was slightly hesitant to embrace a new brand when Avinox launched a few years ago, and the Amflow was one of the only bikes to bet the farm on it. But that’s all changed with the new systems and with the demand for this level of power now proven more manufacturers are buying into it.
