Distinguished by their smaller size when compared to medium vans like the popular Ford Transit Custom, small vans typically boast a payload averaging 600-850kg, occasionally surpassing the capacity of their medium counterparts due to their lower body weight.
Opting to drive a new small van over a medium or large alternative offers numerous advantages, particularly for those not requiring extensive cargo space. Those advantages include enhanced manoeuvrability and easier parking in urban settings, increased fuel efficiency and heightened security at home due to their car-like dimensions (they can easily fit on driveways, for example). Additionally, the reduced space in the back means items being carried are often closer together reducing load movement, preventing damage to the van's interior and the transported items.

Citroen Berlingo

A favourite among tradespeople, the latest Citroen Berlingo boasts an impressive range of BlueHDi diesel engines, a petrol option, and a fully-electric model with a 170-mile range (soon to increase to around 200 miles in the latest facelift). It is currently offered in two body lengths and can carry a substantial payload of over 1000kg.

Vauxhall Combo

Fully updated in line with the other Stellantis brands, the Vauxhall Combo features strong 1.5-litre diesel engines and an electric variant with a 170-mile range (soon to increase to around 200 miles in the latest facelift). With new trim levels, even the entry-level Combo Prime includes air conditioning, cruise control and an 8-inch multimedia screen.

Volkswagen Caddy Cargo

Now in its 5th generation, the Volkswagen Caddy boasts a quality build, a redesigned interior and modern tech, including safety features like Automatic Post-Collision braking. Even the base model comes equipped with advanced safety technologies. Payload is lower than other small vans, but if you want a taste of premium in the small van marketplace then look no further.

Renault Kangoo

Proving particularly popular with businesses, the newest Renault Kangoo can accommodate payloads of up to 987kg. It is offered in diesel and petrol engine options, as well as a fully-electric model. Designed with tradespeople in mind, it features an optional internal rack for carrying long loads. Platform sharing with the Nissan Townstar and new Mercedes-Benz Citan, the new Kangoo is definitely one to check out.

Peugeot Partner

A longstanding choice for small businesses and big fleets such as Royal Mail post vans, the Peugeot Partner offers versatility with its two body lengths, two diesel engines, an electric model, and four trim levels. The 'Grip Premium' trim is well-suited for demanding terrains thanks to an integrated traction control dial and hardy suspension.

Ford Transit Connect

Ford's legacy greatly benefits the Transit Connect - it is part of one of the most famous families of vans ever known alongside the Transit and Transit Custom. The Connect small van is offered in various lengths, vehicle weights, engine options and trim levels, including the sporty Sport and MS-RT versions. Snap yours up before they’re gone, the Connect is now discontinued with the Courier’s new upweighted model taking over.

Toyota Proace City

Sharing a platform with the Stellantis group vans, the Toyota Proace City distinguishes itself with unique equipment levels. It is available with features like 16-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured bumpers, and a full satellite navigation system. There’s a lot to like about Toyota’s take on the Stellantis small van platform - it would be on my list!

Fiat Doblo

Adopting the same platform used by the other Stellantis small vans, the Fiat Doblo features smart options like 'Magic Cargo' for storing long loads and a 'Magic Mirror' providing a rear view and acting as a reverse camera. It’s the little things that make the most difference, and while the Doblo Cargo is technically a small van, like all the other Stellantis vans it looks like a medium van!

Small Van Fuel Types

Small vans in the UK are currently available in various fuel options - the most popular include:
  • Electric: Silent and eco-friendly, electric vans are suitable for low or zero emission zones and require minimal maintenance - it’s the future, so embrace it now or closer to the deadline.
  • Hybrid: Combining electric and petrol/diesel power, hybrids offer flexibility in driving conditions and can operate in pure electric mode when needed.
  • Diesel: Currently the most popular fuel type on UK roads for small vans, modern diesel engines are known for their economy, quiet operation and improved cleanliness.
  • Petrol: Is apparently making a comeback, petrol-powered small vans are quieter and lack a diesel particulate filter, but many manufacturers insist that petrol is still in demand.
