As cars become more and more alike the stories behind the brands become ever more important for consumers looking for something to buy into. And, boy, does Alfa Romeo have a story to tell! It’s one brimming with Italian passion, romance, tragedy and a proud legacy of sporting success along the way.
On the one hand a mainstream brand like Fiat but on the other a builder of exotica to rival Ferrari (Enzo Ferrari himself was once an Alfa man) it’s experienced highs and lows along the way but, in recent years, looks to be finally delivering on the promise. In this video Rory takes a look at that story, experiences a taste of Alfa Romeo’s heritage and what makes it tick and then explores how that finds its thrilling expression in its most spectacular road car of recent times – the Giulia GTAm.
An extreme evolution of the already spectacular Giulia Quadrifoglio – itself based on the regular Giulia saloon – the GTAm combines all of Alfa Romeo’s sporting traditions with technical upgrades developed with its F1 partners Sauber Engineering. With a production run of just 500 cars the GTAm is as exclusive as it is fast, the Quadrifoglio’s engine boosted from 510 horsepower to 540 horsepower while from front to back everything from tyres, suspension and aerodynamic aids have been uprated for ultimate performance on both road and track. 0-62mph takes just 3.6 seconds but the GTAm’s real talent is for sustained speed through the corners, lap after lap. As Rory ably demonstrates.
But Alfa Romeo is about more than just one car, and the decades of passion and sporting heritage that inspires the GTAm takes Rory on a deeper journey into the brand’s past, with drives in some of its most iconic models. This is, after all, the brand that won the first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix of the modern championship back in 1950, and bagged first place in all but one of the races held in that inaugural year.
The story goes a lot further back than that, though, as Rory explores. This includes discovering the reason its sporting models proudly wear that distinctive four-leafed clover badge – this the inspiration for the Quadrifoglio name – and some of the incredible personalities associated with it over the years.
In some ways the GTAm closes a chapter for Alfa Romeo as well, this sporting saloon perhaps a final fling for this traditional red-blooded vision of performance ahead of the brand shifting to electrification and more of-the-moment products like the hybrid Tonale crossover. Can this new generation of cars successfully translate Alfa Romeo’s incredible heritage into this new automotive age? Given this rich history we can only hope so!
